Job Description Summary

The Senior Counsel position is responsible for providing a broad range of cost-effective, high quality legal services in the area of Corporate Litigation, including management of litigation involving Travelers and its subsidiaries, and advising internal clients on all aspects of the business relating to litigation. This position handles complex, non-claim matters to support all business units. Among the litigation handled in Corporate Litigation: class actions involving the company’s underwriting or business practices; shareholder litigation; disputes with agents; litigation involving the company’s investments and real estate; bankruptcy and premium collection matters; and litigation involving the Company’s intellectual property. Bankruptcy experience a plus. This position may not lead others.

Hartford preferred but will consider other locations.

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage litigation on behalf of the company, oversee outside counsel and drive strategy.

  • Provide legal advice and counsel to internal stakeholders and senior management within respective lines of business

  • Negotiate with clients or management and/or attempts to influence leaders at all levels regarding matters of significance to the legal community.

  • Research legal principles and precedents within area of specialization or expertise.

  • Proactively identify and communicate risk to internal and/or external customers and provides recommendations on how to mitigate that risk.

  • Draft, negotiate and execute legal documents.

  • Maintain awareness of external judicial climate and legal developments.

  • Build and maintain strong internal and external client relationships.

  • Act as a mentor and coach to less senior attorneys and/or paralegal/staff.

May prepare or review annual legal fees budget for assigned matters. Review invoices from outside counsel and recommend adjustments. Within authority level, approve invoices.

  • Make effective use of technologies and automation to gain efficiencies in the practice of law.

  • Work collaboratively and build and maintain strong relationships with internal clients and other lawyers and staff across the legal department.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate or equivalent International legal degree; graduate of an accredited law school.

  • Minimum of 7 years of prior legal experience.

  • Active license to practice law in the state(s) in which representation is required.

Education, Work Experience, & Knowledge

  • Minimum of 7 years broad-based commercial litigation experience in a law firm and/or in-house

Environmental / Work Schedules / Other

  • Occasional travel required
