Company Context

In August 2019, Diageo established a joint venture, Ron Santiago S.A., with Corporación Cuba Ron S.A., a leader in the production of premium Cuban rums. This partnership granted the JV exclusive distribution rights to Santiago de Cuba, a premium Cuban heritage rum brand, both locally and globally. The operations of the JV encompass the procurement of the product from Cuba Ron, sourcing dry materials for production, and managing sales to customers within Cuba as well as exporting the product worldwide. The Finance Controller at Ron Santiago S.A. plays a crucial senior finance role within the JV, based in Cuba, and is responsible for the financial stewardship of Ron Santiago de Cuba, a premium brand with a rich heritage in rum making. This role is pivotal in driving the brands and business development in the Cuban market ('onshore') and supporting its growth on a global scale ('offshore'). The ‘onshore’ is a £5m NSV, £2m OP, high GM% business selling and promoting RSDC across all route-to-markets with the potential for medium-term double-digit growth.

The role:

The Financial Controller is a key individual contributor who wields influence across all organizational levels, leading with vision as Diageo's finance ambassador within the Joint Venture. Primarily focused on the onshore business unit while also supporting the offshore unit, the role is aimed at:

Empowering Decision-Making: Influence and support decision-making through data-driven conversations, transforming facts into actionable insights to lead and support effective discussions.

Enhancing Visibility: Provide timely and accurate insights into the company's performance, expertly balancing risks and opportunities, and leading Business Performance Management (BPM) sessions for both local and corporate forums.

Integrating and Establishing Ways of Working: Drive the integration of Diageo's best practices into local operations to achieve finely-tuned and efficient workflows.

Strategic Business Planning and externally obsessed: Co-lead business planning efforts by offering financial modeling, scenario planning, capturing performance insights, and managing risks, all aimed at steering the company towards its goals. Lead the commercial finance agenda, crafting strategies from short to long term to navigate a changing and volatile economy, focusing on stability and revenue management. Maintain an external focus, understanding market dynamics and trends, and aligning the company's strategies with the evolving business landscape to ensure competitiveness and growth.

Financial Stewardship: Manage the Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow, ensuring balanced decision-making and optimal performance. Implement effective opportunities and risk (O&R) strategies to enhance financial health. Ensure precise and compliant accounting and reporting practices, adhering to both management and statutory requirements.

Championing Governance: Uphold corporate governance, compliance, ethics, and controls within the company, setting a standard for integrity and transparency. Lead the Risk Management Committee, mapping key business and financial risks to safeguard the company's interests.

Collaborative Engagement: Foster strong, productive relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, including Global Compliance, Global Treasury, Business Shared Service Centers, CC&E, GAR, and banking partners. Prioritize collaboration with other Joint Ventures and, most importantly, with the local partner and producer, Cuba Ron Corporation, to ensure cohesive and effective engagement across all fronts.

Project Contributions: Contribute to ad hoc projects as required, playing a pivotal role in the execution of the business strategy.

Dynamic Financial Management: Take charge of the day-to-day management of the respective Profit and Loss/Balance Sheet area, ensuring excellence in accounting, reporting, and controlling. Oversee internal and external audits, financial analysis, hard close reporting, and key controls.

• Comprehensive review of internal and external audit reports.

• Periodic analysis of financials, including the allocation of common expenses such as overheads and marketing.

• Rigorous hard close reporting, encompassing top-line performance, risk and opportunities, and margin analysis by brand as needed.

• Implementation and vigilant monitoring of key controls related to Record to Report, Costs and Tax, Cash, and Payroll activities, ensuring flawless execution and adherence to standards.

Strategic Decision Support: Act as a proactive financial partner to optimize the JV's financial performance within the overall business framework. Deliver multi-year P&Ls, financial insights, and risk identification, and identify opportunities to strengthen profitability.

• Conducting scenario-planning and sensitivity analysis of key performance drivers.

• Scrutinizing all P&L inputs from various business members.

• Identifying and capitalizing on opportunities to bolster profitability.

Process Excellence and Risk Management: Champion the accuracy, efficiency, and timeliness of financial processes, strictly adhering to internal control procedures in line with global standards. Proactively assess and manage key business and financial risks, maintaining an updated Business Risk Footprint and Business Continuity Plan (BCP).

Required skills and capabilities.

  • Relevant finance / business degree  

  • Strong Analytics skills, Accounting, Reporting, and/or Financial Controlling experience is required. 

  • Min of 5 years relevant working experience in a multinational environment, preferably in FMCG sector

  • Preferably experience with Internal / external audit experience and/or SOX controls.

  • Experience in a Shared services environment is considered as an advantage. 

  • Fluent in English and Spanish language.

  • Relevant experience with SAP FI /CO modules or other ERP systems.

  • Strong Excel knowledge

  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.

  • Resilient with a can-do attitude

  • Proven strong stakeholder and expectations management skills.

  • Experience of working on large scale change project is considered an advantage.
