Description of Work

This a Welder position for the Division One Bridge Maintenance Unit and could be located in any one of the four bridge maintenance yards in Division One. The selected applicant must be proficient in the use of a welder and cutting torch. The employee will have to fabricate bridge components such as caps, bearing plates, diaphragms, post blocks and rail components. The selected applicant will be required to read and interpret detailed blueprints and bridge plans. The selected applicant will also need to be knowledgeable about how skews, grades, and super elevations affect fabrication. The employee will also be required to cut and fit steel to very close tolerances for repairing steel I-Beams, piles to proper lengths and caps to proper heights. The selected applicant will perform basic carpentry work, pouring and finishing concrete, tying reinforcing steel and setting I-Beams. Will also be required to fill in on bridge crew as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Working knowledge of the principles and methods of oxygen/acetylene cutting and electric ARC, MIG and TIG welding

  • Demonstrated ability to layout, cut and fit material for welding

  • Experience performing a variety of welding and cutting tasks (that includes repair, modification, maintenance and fabrication)

  • Experience dismantling and reassembling parts welded

  • Demonstrated ability working from and following oral and written directions and drawings, and copying or reproducing items which have been broken

    Additional Expectations:

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date . Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Steel toe safety shoes will be needed. Employee will be expected to work in emergency situations and inclement weather. Position will require climbing, bending, and walking on uneven terrain. May require work during non-traditional work hours, including nights, weekends and holidays, and times of emergency.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High School or General Education Development diploma (GED) and two years of progressive experience in acetylene or electric arc welding; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
