Instrumentation Technician - Westport

Under moderate supervision, to perform the routine duties necessary to ensure that laboratory services are of the highest quality, and to ensure that such services are provided in a timely, safe, legal, and ethical manner.

How you’ll make an impact at Intertek:

  • Provide maintenance and calibration support services to keep the laboratory systems operational with highest availability as the goal for Westport to meet budgeting targets and deliver results to customers on time

  • Perform routine, non-routine and preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment and maintain documentation to track and support all maintenance efforts. Requires proactive approach to prevent equipment failures.

  • Calibrate laboratory support equipment including but not limited to mechanical and electronic gauges, pressure regulating equipment, mechanical and electromechanical laboratory pumps, physical and digital thermometers and measurement equipment, analytical balances and other analytical measurement equipment

  • Send equipment in for calibration and maintenance when these services cannot be performed locally – report and follow-up to ensure timely services

  • Maintain equipment inventory systems to track all calibration and maintenance records in the Labware Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)

  • Serve as the key contact for all maintenance and calibration issues

  • To verify and communicate the results obtained, and to make the appropriate entries into instrument logs, control charts, calibration records, laboratory worksheets, and any other media, whether print or electronic, required to ensure the validity and traceability of the information

  • Maintain documentation, equipment, and work areas in a neat and orderly condition

  • Assist in the training of less experience employees; be a mentor

  • Carry out the above responsibilities, and all others which may be assigned, in a manner demonstrating support for and adherence to the Company’s Safety Policy and Procedures, Quality Policy and Procedures, Ethics Policy, Environmental Management System, Vision and strategy, and to exercise good judgment, commons sense, and diplomacy in so doing

Additional Qualifications/Responsibilities:

What it takes to be successful in this role:

  • Instrumentation Technician shall have thorough knowledge of electrical, pressure, flow, temperature, control and data acquisition systems related to laboratory operations

  • 4+ years prior laboratory support experience in supporting laboratory activities in the petroleum industry or related field

  • Willing to work overtime and weekends to meet laboratory timelines

  • Firm grasp of industry accepted experimental protocols and ability to perform QA/QC on experimental instruments and workstations

  • The Instrumentation Technician 1 must be physically able to do the work required; some heavy lifting, working with high temperatures (>300F) and high pressure (>20Kpsi) equipment.

  • Perform work safely while handling crude oils, gases, acids and other oil field chemicals under temperature and pressure

  • Possess a mechanical aptitude and exposure to data acquisition software a solid plusExpected to use Excel and Word to record, process lab data for troubleshooting and verification purposes

  • The Instrumentation Technician 1 should have a positive attitude, a high tolerance for job pressure and be able to multitask on several projects simultaneously

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, move, push and pull 30 to 50 pounds frequently. Occasionally, over 50 pounds with assistance.

  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, (hearing) and to make the discriminations in sound.

  • Ability to kneel and squat occasionally

  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time

  • Ability to climb occasionally
