We have an exciting opportunity for a Planetary Geochemist to join the team with our Science & Exploration Division.

The Planetary Geochemist will:

  • Work on Jacobs JETSII contract in support of the Astromaterials Research & Exploration Science Directorate (ARES) at NASA's Johnson Space Center (JSC) in the field of astromaterials and planetary science, while providing support for NASA missions.

  • Participate in collaborative research with a diverse team of internal and external scientists.

  • Conduct research in cosmochemistry by analyzing astromaterial samples using ARES unique facility.

  • Coordinate and assist with the routine upkeep and maintenance of the NanoSIMS instrument.

  • Support the growth of ARES and provide service to local and external users.

  • Develop new lines of research and apply for competed research grants.

  • Summarize, communicate, and publish quantitative scientific results.

  • Actively participate in safety programs.

  • Perform other tasks as assigned.​

Here’s what you’ll need :

Requisition Qualifications:

This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on the candidate's experience, requirements, and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.

  • A BS degree and a minimum of 2-5 years of experience are typically required.

  • Must have at least 5 years of experience operating a SIMS and/or NanoSIMS instrument as an independent user.

  • Must have knowledge of the theory and practice of isotopic analyses of geologic and/or planetary samples and data reduction.

  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills.

Requisition Preferences:​

  • PhD in Geology or Planetary Science.

  • Experience with electron beam instruments (SEM, EPMA, TEM, and/or FIB).

  • Experience with analytical technique development and innovation.

  • Experience with astromaterials, and generally, irreplaceable samples.

  • Demonstrated ability to secure funding through competitive research proposals is a plus.​

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).

Equipment and Machines

Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).

Attendance

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
