Powell Industries, Inc. Technical Sales Manager in Houston, Texas

A Technical Sales Manager is responsible for leading a team of sales and estimating professionals focused on selling technical products or services to clients. They work closely with the sales and engineering teams to develop sales strategies, identify new business opportunities, achieve sales targets, as well as estimate projects according to engineering guidelines. Additionally, they provide technical expertise and support to clients, ensuring that products or services meet their needs and specifications. This role requires strong sales and technical skills, as well as excellent communication relationship-building abilities. The position also needs a motivated leader capable of self-managing, and structuring and overseeing a team of estimators to deliver proposals in time for our internal and external customers.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Act as Business focal point, and contribute technical expertise, on the breadth of the Automation portfolio. Inform enquiry/bid go no-go decisions.

  • Partner with Sales / Strategic Accounts to ensure the correct technical and commercial decision making in line with company objectives.

  • Partner with Sales / Strategic Accounts to ensure there is an agreed strategy to optimize the Company’s chances of securing orders, at the best possible margin, from the enquiries which are selected for bidding.

  • Partner with Sales / Strategic Accounts to ensure the most effective technical and commercial bid strategy is followed in each case.

  • Partner with internal stakeholders, delivering Automation expertise.

  • Manage PAD Sales Applications Engineering resources to best meet the overall engineering requirements for those tenders identified as strategic whilst maintaining flexibility within the department to manage additional priority workload. This must be achieved BY ensuring the focus is maintained on winning orders (quality) and not just producing tenders (quantity)

  • Lead a department of estimating engineers in the Powell Automation Division, executing on responsibilities that comprise task assignment, performance management, on-the-job training, information management supplier/vendor management

  • Create and modify standard solutions and offerings for PAD customers while aligning with engineering and project management efficiencies in cost, quality and execution.

  • Lead a technical team and manage direct reports in providing complex technical solutions for power systems and automation applications in MV and LV switchgear.

  • Creating standards while looking for efficiency in cost, quality, and delivery. Develop and lead strategic initiatives to continuously drive the growth and expansion of the Automation franchise. This may include customer site visits to interface with and provide innovative solutions to meet customer requirements / needs.

  • Manage PAD Internal Sales team that will procure internal opportunities with the goal to maximize automation content.

  • Build and maintain customer relationships, including helping to manage customer expectations of Automation deliverables.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of five (5) years of managerial experience of engineering teams

  • BS in a technical discipline, preferably an Electrical Engineer, from an accredited institution with a minimum of 8-10 years of relevant work experience, or a minimum of fifteen (15) years of relevant industry working experience is required.

  • Strong technical background and experience (senior level) in at least one of the following is required: Automation and Control systems Power Systems Electrical System Integration preferably for electrical switchgear applications

  • Demonstrate leadership, mentorship, and problem-solving skills for engineering teams and activities.

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment

  • Must have excellent English communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, and collaboration skills to effectively work with both business and technical teams.

  • Excel working independently as well as in a team-oriented roles.

  • Demonstrate commitment to continuous improvement.

  • Develop and utilize engineering related KPIs to demonstrate growth, efficiency, and cost improvements for PSD engineering solutions.

  • Control engineering costs through monitoring budget performance of engineering project execution.

  • Manage and oversee the use of subcontractors.

  • Willingness to travel up to 25%

Skills, Abilities & Other Requirements

  • Knowledge and/or experience in the following: Drafting/CAD skills, design and circuitry, documentation, creating and proposing drawings, reading and interpreting electrical symbols, characters, and drawings, apply ANSI, ISO requirements for a specific department and how it interfaces, industry codes and standards, power system applications, checking wiring diagrams and completed jobs, ordering materials, interpreting customer job specifications, consulting and troubleshooting on complex jobs, and provide technical assistance with sales/customer, and shop employees.

  • Knowledge of multiple product lines such as 5/15kV Switchgear, 38kV Switchgear, Low Voltage MCC, Medium Voltage MCC, Power Control Rooms, Panelboards, Relay Panels, etc.

  • Knowledge of new and previous vintages of Powell equipment

  • Familiarity with modifications to existing equipment in the field Innovative to improve existing products based on quality, delivery, and cost.

Working & Environmental Conditions

The employee typically performs duties in a normal office environment. There will be some work in a shop environment and exposure to the elements of our shop.

Additionally, there may be some work performed in the field with exposure to construction sites or active customer facilities. Travel is required for this position. The amount of travel is estimated to be 25% of the time to customer sites. The customer sites can be refineries, utility substation yards or even offshore platforms. The position will contain working in an office environment as well has performing testing on the manufacturing floor with the equipment.
