Experienced Systems Engineer

(Level 3) to join our

Space Launch Systems Program

(SLS) located in Huntsville, AL.

The SLS heavy-lift launch vehicle is essential to NASA’s deep-space exploration endeavors, providing an entirely new capability for science and human exploration beyond Earth’s orbit. The Huntsville-based SLS team is responsible for the design, development, test and production of the SLS cryogenic stages and avionics. The core stage preliminary design review (PDR) was completed successfully in December 2012.  Boeing and NASA completed the Critical Design Review of the core stage of the vehicle in 2014, validating the final design before beginning full production on the rocket.  Manufacturing operations for the core stage are centered in New Orleans.  Design and development work for the Exploration Upper Stage has begun with a Critical Design Review expected in 2021. SLS will be the most powerful rocket in history and is designed to be flexible and evolvable to meet a variety of crew and cargo mission needs. The selected candidate will specifically work on the

Position Responsibilities:

This position is for a systems engineer in the SLS Systems Engineering, Integration and Test (SEIT) organization. Responsibilities include requirements development, functional analysis, technical performance measures, trade studies, integration, and verification. The engineer will apply systems engineering processes, methodologies and tools to the design, integration, and test of SLS and its derivatives.  Typical tasks include: 

Perform SLS requirements development and analyses utilizing DOORS and model based systems engineering (MBSE) methodologies and tools, such as Team Center, to support development of system engineering products.

Develop and maintain Technical Performance Measures (TPMs), requirement compliance assessments, and requirements derivation and allocation to components.

Assists, with the verification and validation of system-of-systems concepts or system concepts or subsystem concepts by inspection, analysis, test, and demonstration to assure that the system architecture and design concepts satisfy the intent of the customer requirements.

Develops and documents sections of the verification plan based on verification requirements to identify sequence of activities, processes, tools, equipments, facilities, and other resources needed to accomplish requirements verification, to enable initiation of the verification efforts.

Collects data and reports the progress and status of integration, checkout, or verification activities and anomaly resolutions by reporting on these activities to assure integration validity and to enable meeting the program schedule.

Individual will support and participate in technical meetings with NASA counterparts, leaders, and technical staff.  

The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

Minimum Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering

Minimum 3 years of experience in developing requirements for systems engineering processes

Minimum 3 years of experience in communicating to employees, customers, peers and multiple levels of leadership

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

2+ years of NASA experience

2+ years of DOORS experience



Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.


This is a First/ Morning shift position.


Relocation assistance is not a negotiable benefit for this position. Candidates must live in the immediate area or relocate at their own expense.


Around 10% travel is required
