Purpose: The purpose of the Lilly Heath Economic and Outcomes Research (HEOR) team is to accelerate equitable patient access and transform healthcare delivery through the execution of bold, high impact science.

The Associate Vice President, HEOR – Oncology is responsible for the development and delivery of HEOR and RWE plans for a business unit across the lifecycle of each asset including early phase, late phase, and US launch/ post launch work. The leader will provide clinical expertise as well as scientific, strategic, and people leadership to realize the full potential of these capabilities. The clinical leader will serve as the global lead and point of contact for the respective business unit, provide HEOR and RWE strategic leadership to all the assets within that portfolio, and enable the integration and implementation of these strategies with functional, cross functional and, as necessary, alliance partners. In addition to leadership accountability for the team’s work, this leader will have individual ownership of key project work and associated deliverables. The project workload will consume 30-50% of the leaders capacity while the remaining capacity will be focused on team leadership and strategy development and execution.

Responsibilities of the position encompass people management and organizational leadership, strategy development and execution, research and publications oversight and execution, and external engagement as specified below in the key responsibilities section. The leader will attract, develop, and grow talent and build a high performing, diverse, and inclusive team. Additionally, the Associate Vice President will work with the Medical Affairs leadership team to influence broadly and achieve the function’s long term strategic objectives. The leader will report to the Sr. Vice President Global Medical Affairs, Oncology .

Project Workload

  • Ownership of individual dedicated projects; approximately 30%-50% of time

  • Prioritize and resource the most important, high impact work

  • Ensure effective execution of work plans resulting in the development of relevant, reliable, and timely evidence

People Management and Organizational Leadership

  • Establish and nurture a work environment and culture that upholds the Lilly values and Team Lilly expectations

  • Set and communicate performance standards for staff, measure and report execution and impact

  • Lead and champion innovation and transformation efforts

  • Identify and ensure implementation of continuous improvement and simplification initiatives

Strategy Development and Execution

  • Drive the early and sustained integration of HEOR and RWE into development and commercial strategies—including early phase, late phase, US launch/post launch throughout the lifecycle

  • Operate a world class RWE infrastructure inclusive of data, analytics, and capabilities

  • Create the ecosystem and processes to engage in innovative external collaborations

  • Drive execution of HEOR brand/product strategies in partnership with cross-functional leaders to optimize impact

  • Accountable for design and delivery of platform and disease HEOR and RWE strategy and research deliverables

  • Ensure that strategic input, RWE, and Patient Reported Outcomes insights are integrated into product development

Research and Publications Oversight and Execution

  • Develop and foster an HEOR and RWE research ecosystem that results in consistent delivery of bold, high impact science that accelerates equitable patient access and transforms health care delivery

  • Establish plans for HEOR and RWE activities in alignment with portfolio and product priorities

  • Contribute to, review, and approve protocols, contracts, final reports, and disclosures

  • Ensure high impact, targeted disclosure and dissemination plans are developed and delivered

  • Ensure that appropriate research and publications impact measures and metrics are developed and communicated

  • Facilitate strong collaboration between HEOR and cross functional business to optimally support the brand/molecule

  • Partner with HEOR leaders to prioritize and ensure on-strategy, on-time, on-budget delivery of all research deliverables

  • Work cross-functionally to identify, procure, and leverage real world data sources to enable evidence generation

  • Generate, communicate, and broaden the application of RWE internally and externally

  • Support and lead the implementation of operational, quality, and business processes

  • Ensure regular and transparent communication of project status to functional and cross functional leaders

External Engagement

  • Ensure appropriate and effective engagement with payers, third party organizations, and health outcomes academic/government researchers and institutions that support business priorities and objectives

  • Partner effectively with policy focused cross functional colleagues to prioritize engagement on key external initiatives and/or environment shaping activities

  • Monitor and understand the external environment and use insight to define and articulate future needs and priorities

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

  • Extensive experience/ knowledge in Oncology

  • Bachelor’s degree in science

  • Previous leadership experience and demonstrated ability to build trust, gain alignment, deliver high performance, and achieve results

  • Relevant Drug Development and/or Commercialization experience within the pharmaceutical industry with strong knowledge of payer requirements

  • Must be in the United States, preferably Indianapolis

  • Leadership skills and problem-solving capability as demonstrated by the ability to evaluate threats and opportunities for payers and plan for appropriate evidence generation within a development program, including complementary research

Other Information/Additional Preferences:

  • MD, PhD, PharmD

  • Deep therapeutic expertise in research discipline related to HEOR and RWE

  • Relevant disease state expertise

  • Experience across discovery, drug development, and commercialization

  • Proven ability to influence across organizations both horizontally and vertically

  • Experience with alliance and/or partnered products

  • Strong understanding of the US and global health care systems and environment

  • Cultural competency

  • Some domestic and international travel may be required

  • Lilly currently anticipates that the base salary for this position could range from between $229,500 to $336,600 and will depend, in part, on the successful candidate’s qualifications for the role, including education and experience. Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
