Position Summary

In its continuing mission to provide cutting-edge treatment for cancer, diabetes, and other life-threatening diseases, City of Hope is committed to innovative evaluation and analysis of treatments, cost, patient outcomes and patterns of care. To that end, City of Hope has established the City of Hope Disease Registry to identify and integrate existing clinical patient data into an institution-wide repository for research, quality and outcomes purposes. The Associate Disease Registry System Specialist will assist with accomplish these goals. He/she will assist with workflow analyses, business process re-engineering, and procedure/policy documentation to help streamline data documentation by those who generate such data, including but not limited to physicians, investigators, pathologists, and the Disease Registrars.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Apply clinical domain knowledge to help interpret data for comprehensive disease registry information systems.

  • Review and adjudicate results of NLP queries to validate data extraction facilitating the capture of codified data elements.

  • Assist with the development of case report forms and data dictionary specifications for the Disease Registry.

  • Conduct special projects as assigned, working closely with biostatisticians, the Data Mining Section, and Division managers.

  • Provide ad hoc information for requests from the Disease Registry team and physicians.

  • Assist with interpretation of data validations and resolution of data quality queries across various databases sources and tables.

  • Assemble codified disease-specific data within web-based disease registry tools such as RedCap.

  • Be self-motivated and follow through on assigned projects.

  • Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations, and keep abreast of latest trends in the data mining field.

  • Attend and participate in meetings as required.

  • Practice a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.

  • Provide staff relief as required to meet the needs of the department.

Qualifications

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration

  • 3 years’ experience may substitute for minimum education requirements

  • 1 year experience working in a health care setting, preferably in research. If education requirements are not met, at least three years’ experience as Disease Registrar or similar position in oncology setting required.

  • Medical Terminology.

    Preferred education experience and skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred

  • Oncology research, Disease Registry Data Management, Health Information Systems, or related health research field

  • Familiarity with medical databases and system evaluation.

  • The ability to comprehend what is pertinent data from medical record.

  • Ability to read, write and comprehend medical terminology.

  • Excellent oral/written communication and organizational skills.

  • Excellent reading comprehension.

  • Foster/promote a positive image and professional appearance

  • Sensitivity to intercultural relations

  • Access data in computer databases

  • Compile data

  • Proofread documents

  • Research information

  • Troubleshoot problems

  • Experience with Electronic Medical Record based software and Microsoft Office, preferred
