Job Summary : The work at this grade can involve repairing major components such as engines transmissions differentials and transaxles in addition to the work defined for a grade 8 mechanic. Duties and Responsibilities: Responsible for diagnosing and repairing problems with the engine transmission drive train electrical steering suspension brakes and similar systems. - Quickly and efficiently perform routine maintenance and identify the cause of vehicle breakdowns and repair them using the most optimal solution. - Inspect and test vehicles and report work that the vehicle needs using a variety of test equipment techniques and procedures to identify vehicle problems. - Utilizes knowledge of electronic circuits and the use of a variety of test equipment to effectively isolate problem areas disassemble major components as needed in order to replace failed parts and restore the component to operating condition. - Troubleshoot and repair problem areas and use various shop equipment tools e.g. wrenches screwdrivers insulated pliers electrical power tools and pneumatic power tools and a wide variety of specialty tools and test equipment e.g. brake lathes brake baths clutch pilot shop press strut compressor compression tester vacuum gauge electrical systems tester gear pullers and fluid evacuation equipment repair manuals and system diagrams and practices a variety of techniques to ensure the most efficient and effective repair of various makes and models of light duty vehicles passenger cars and light trucks . - Utilizes critical thinking on requirements regarding repairs and implement decisions by selecting the best procedure and equipment or tools necessary to complete a specific job. - Maintain equipment for optimum performance and efficiency based on intricate workings knowledge of equipment and their purpose. - Implements designated tests for quality assurance to confirm repair is performed correctly. - Make independent decision from oral or written symptoms and recommends the proper repair technique and procedure. Determines the type and extent of repair needed as determined by oral assignments or work orders. - Complete repairs and adjustments in accordance with manufacture specification and for quality assurance test drive vehicles to ensure work is satisfactory and vehicle operates as designed. Refers to the higher graded more qualified experienced Technician for supervisory guidance and or work examination. Perform other related duties as assigned. ASE Certification s for assigned work responsibilities are required. XW-09 Technicians must possess all of the following ASE Certifications A4 - Suspension Steering A5 - Brakes A6 - Electrical Electronic Systems A7 - Heating Air Conditioning A8 - Engine Performance Failure to maintain current ASE Certifications may result in a position downgrade or termination due to failure to meet job requirements. PHYSICAL EFFORT Is required to stand stoop bend stretch and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions where parts worked on are in hard-to-reach places. Frequently lifts parts and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds occasionally may lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. WORKING CONDITIONS Normally works inside on concrete floors where it is drafty and noisy and where fumes from vehicles are present and occasionally outside sometimes in bad weather. Is exposed to dirt dust and grease and is subject to cuts bruises burns shocks and strains. TRAINING REQUIREMENT Associate must receive hazardous material HazMat training within 90 days of hire per Department of Transportation regulations Qualifications: EXPERIENCE Two years of experience that provided or required knowledge and ability to perform automotive repair and maintenance services on automobiles trucks vans or forklifts etc. SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE Two years of automotive technical study may substitute one year of experience. CERTIFICATION All of the following Automotive Service Excellence ASE Series A Certifications are required. Candidates with automobile manufacturer certifications in these areas may also qualify.
