**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. The Director of Nursing organizes and plans the overall nursing services and management systems within the department; assures therapy services are being delivered; and directs nursing care activities directly or through delegation, assuring that SMP Health - Ave Maria and department policies and procedures; federal and state regulations; and professional standards of care are maintained. The Director of Nursing periodically evaluates and reviews the nursing care provided to residents, regularly attends staff meetings and attends resident care conferences as needed to evaluate, determine and ensure quality nursing care and adherence to bill of rights, and to ascertain needs for additional or modified services. The incumbent directs and evaluates nursing activities through direct observation, quality assurance activities, statistical reports and staff/resident interaction. This position implements standards, which ensure safe, quality and therapeutically effective resident care. Collaborates with the medical staff and other health care disciplines to ensure nursing care is consistent with medical interventions, and assure continuity of the overall therapeutic regimens. Ensures nursing personnel have valid licenses. 2. Establishes, reviews and updates department policies and procedures in accordance with federal and state requirements, and professional standards of care; with review and approval from the Medical Director and Administration. This position participates in the development and implementation of SMP Health - Ave Maria policies and procedures as requested. This position interprets facility and nursing department policies and procedures to nursing staff. Establishes, monitors and reviews department goals and objectives, and organizational structure. Develops departmental working objectives which integrate into the long range plans of the facility and network. Maintains CONFIDENTIALITY of all pertinent resident care and employee information. 3. The Director of Nursing prepares the annual operating and capital budgets for his/her assigned departments. This position monitors compliance to the budget, and operates the department within the established parameters. Assures expenses do not exceed the approved budget without adequate justification for discrepancies and monitors how expenses impact the financial template, managing to reimbursement. Is responsible for ensuring that all work is completed in a timely, and cost-effective manner, and that proper input is given to the Administrator regarding the department's budgets, capital expenditures and operations. This position verifies and authorizes hours worked in his/her departments. 4. Researches, analyzes and resolves staff and work-related problems, and initiates plans to motivate nursing staff to achieve work goals. This position assures that all staff are properly trained to perform their jobs, properly oriented to the work environment, and have necessary equipment and supplies to perform their job duties. This position is responsible for ensuring appropriate scheduling of department employees and assures there is effective staff scheduling to promote optimum coverage and quality nursing care. The incumbent initiates such personnel actions as hiring, promotion, transfer, discharge, disciplinary action and performance reviews. Evaluates and documents employee performance, setting performance expectations. Uses effective management skills to improve employee performance. This position confers with the Administrator and the Human Resources Department on employee disciplinary actions and terminations. Establ shes and revises job descriptions. 5. Interacts professionally with residents, family members, co-workers, consultants, and visitors. Demonstrates warm, caring feelings about residents, guardians, and visitors. Works with other department managers to coordinate/integrate nursing activities with the activities of other departments. Regularly holds department staff meetings. Prepares medical staff agendas, attends and participates in the medical director meetings to keep open the lines of communication and to comment on nursing issues. Attends and participates in various committees and meetings as requested, to include but not limited to: Quality Assurance, Infection Control, Behavior Intervention Review, Department Coordinator's meetings, SMP Quality Task Force, and SMP Management meetings. Collaborates with educators and nursing students from various nursing schools and coordinates clinical affiliations. 6. As a member of the SMP Quality Task Force the Director of Nursing is responsible for the ongoing development and implementation of the SMP Health - Ave Maria operating plan and designated areas of accountability. The incumbent is also responsible for maintaining an active, cooperative and participative role in the SMP Quality Task Force within SMP to ensure quality care is provided. 7. Works with staff development to maintain and oversee an active quality assurance program throughout all areas of responsibility supervised in order to identify problems, and demonstrate a positive impact on the quality of services provided. The Director of Nursing provides in-service and educational opportunities for nursing staff and coordinates education of all departments. This position formulates, implements, and evaluates plans for orientation and staff development, provides in-services to the nursing service department, works with Staff Development to assure adequate employee orientation programs are in place, maintains records of in-service programs and attendance, and provides up-to-date nursing reference material. The incumbent works closely with the Staff Trainer to facilitate staff development and professional growth. 8. The Director of Nursing is responsible for completing a plan of correction as needed for state surveys and ensuring implementation and correction of systems, processes, work habits, etc. to ensure any deficiencies are addressed appropriately and a positive outcome for residents is achieved. 9. The Director of Nursing is the Administrator's designee in his/her absence in the facility and is responsible for the overall operation and direction during these times. The incumbent has the authority to make administrative level decisions in situations requiring immediate response in line with the philosophy and operational plan of the organization.
