Diabetes Care Kilkenny

Our new manufacturing facility in Kilkenny, opening in 2024, reflects the growing demand for Abbott's global Diabetes Care products. The facility will be a centre for world-class engineering, quality, medical device manufacturing, and other science-based professionals to produce life-changing technologies, including the FreeStyle Libre 3, a system that automatically delivers real-time, up-to-the-minute glucose readings, with the smallest and thinnest wearable glucose sensor that provides unsurpassed 14-day accuracy and optional glucose alarms directly to smartphones. This enables people with diabetes to live the best and fullest lives they can.

Based at our new Abbott Diabetes Care (ADC) manufacturing facility in Kilkenny, Ireland the site’s Operation System Engineering function currently has an opportunity for a Manufacturing Systems Engineer to join their expanding team.

The team supports the on-going development, validation, deployment, and support of data systems which integrate into our manufacturing operations, enabling ADC to provide innovative state-of-the-art solutions that facilitate the company’s Factory 4.0 initiatives.

As the Manufacturing Systems Engineer, you will be primarily responsible for software systems employed in the production of our Diabetes sensors. Key areas of ownership will include the design and implementation of software-based systems for the real-time acquisition and storage of data from our production machinery, as well as system resilience in areas of automated back-up and recovery, and cyber security.

Areas of expertise are expected to include, but are not limited to, software interfacing with electro-mechanical systems in the operational technology layer, software development, database design and SQL query language, data management for real-time acquisition and storage, and cybersecurity. The Manufacturing System Engineering shall generate/support system requirements for both bespoke developed and customisable off-the-shelf systems, work with original equipment manufacturers to guide detailed design implementation, and manage system integration verification and validation activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical expert for data and manufacturing operations management systems

  • Implement, and validate new software systems for real-time data acquisition from the production machinery and laboratory processes

  • Implement and validate Oracle databases for data storage

  • Identify and deliver systems for both PC and PLC backup and recovery

  • Undertake cyber security risk analysis and manage programs to raise the maturity level for cyber security at the operational technology layer

  • Define roadmap and manage periodic updating of operating systems

  • Work with Senior Manufacturing Systems Engineer, controls engineers, vision engineers and OEM manufactures to continuously improve processes and standards in line with business needs

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Systems, Mechanical, Computer, Electrical, Biomedical, or Software), or related discipline

  • 3+ years of in a similar position, including systems integration experience/integrating all system components (electrical, mechanical, software), system architecture, requirement/user need gathering

  • Experience in application development and deployment (e.g. Microsoft Visual Studio, C#, VB.net, SQL Server)

  • Experience in software testing, verification, and validation

  • Experience with querying SQL databases

  • Experience with data historians

  • Familiarity with 21 CFR Part 820 and Part 11 guidelines

  • Good problem-solving abilities – able to identify facts, consider alternative approaches and evaluate the most appropriate action

  • Experience working in a validated environment with strong discipline regarding change control is preferred

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering (Systems, Mechanical, Computer, Electrical, Biomedical, or Software), or related discipline

  • Experience working in the medical device industry

  • Experience with OSI PI

  • Experience with line controllers, PLC, SCADA, MES systems

  • Cyber Security experience
