Summary This position is located in a National Park Service Unit. The primary purpose of the position is to perform recurring building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties and to assist journeymen and other higher graded maintenance workers. Incumbent utilizes knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts. Responsibilities Performs carpentry repairs to historic and modern buildings and quarters. Constructs, installs, repairs and replaces items such as doors, shelves Performs plumbing tasks such as replacing hose bibs, valves, nipples, unions and elbows, fixtures, toilets, flush valves, faucets, and various types of pipe and copper lines Paints various types of structures such as interior and exterior metal, wood and masonry surfaces, and a variety of wooden Performs electrical tasks involving making repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, and insulating defective wiring and fixtures. Performs masonry work of limited difficulty involving the maintenance, repair, construction, and/or stabilization of historic sites built of stone, mortar, and/or contemporary buildings, features or structures. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Direct Deposit: Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. Drivers License: You must possess a current state valid driver's license. Vehicle Operations: You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. Probationary Period: If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprints reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of materials Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic) Screen Out: Perform simple and routine work involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, and related utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, painting, and other related trades. I have used simple measures and hand tools to replace broken planks on picnic tables; broken windows using precut stock; minor adjustments or replaces hinges, latches, and catches. I have used a brush and roller on projects where appearances are not critical such as staining picnic tables and trash barrels. I have tightened or replaced plumbing fittings and fixtures which do not require custom fitting or solder joints; replaced faucet washers; unplugged drains using a plunger; replaced liquid petroleum gas bottles. I have performed routine maintenance on campground sites and trails using hand tools to re-grade and reset barriers to restore areas to original appearances. I have operated a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites. I have cleaned and serviced chemical toilets, restrooms, and other campground or visitor facilities. I have operated a forklift to load and unload supplies and light equipment not requiring special rigging. My work has been under close supervision, and I referred unusual problems to the supervisor or a higher graded employee. Additional Information This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate. A Recruitment Incentive May Be Authorized for a newly selected employee when appointed to a permanent, temporary, or term position. A Federal employee who is transferring to the National Park Service from another component, bureau or Federal agency and who does not meet the conditions under 5 CFR §575.102 is not eligible for a recruitment incentive. A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another. Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions. Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects. Documentation for the Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA) eligibility, submission of ALL SF-50s and performance information for each period of temporary/term employment that qualifies for LMWFA. Performance documentation can be obtained by contacting the supervisors for the positions you served in during your 24 months. If they did not complete performance appraisals ask them to provide a statement of performance for each period of service. The statement must specify the dates for each employment period and your level of performance (dates should match the dates on the SF-50s).
