What’s in it for you:

This Senior Systems Design Engineer is responsible for all aspects of equipment design and component integration for Commercial HVAC scroll and screw chiller/heat pump products. This includes having the technical expertise to model system performance, support new technology projects, create system and subsystem DFMEA documentation, develop and lead product design, supervise product validation testing, and drive quality and reliability issues to root cause. The Product Systems Design Engineer interacts with other functional resource groups to support product design and integration, such as the Trane Technologies Engineering Technology Centers, Networks of Excellence, Compressor Engineering, Thermal Systems Engineering, Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineer, Manufacturing, etc. To be successful, this Product Systems Design Engineer will need to collaborate closely with Scroll and Screw Chiller Engineering teams located in La Crosse, WI and Pueblo, CO along with support organizations located in Shanghai, China and Bangalore, India.

Where is the work:

Due to the nature of this role, this position has been designated as a Hybrid work schedule, with work performed onsite 3 days each week.

What you will do:

  • Develop HVAC refrigeration and airflow sub-systems to meet performance standards, sustainability targets, regulatory requirements, quality goals, and cost targets.

  • Create and execute computer models to simulate and predict unit performance.

  • Support the development of Design Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (DFMEAs).

  • Create mechanical designs for systems and subsystems that leverage modular architecture and meet agency, code, structural, and serviceability requirements.

  • Incorporate Design For Manufacturing (DFM) features to support efficient factory build processes.

  • Develop laboratory test plans and analyze test data, including use of Six Sigma tools, statistical analysis techniques, and applying Design for Reliability principles.

  • Provide guidance and leadership to designers, lab technicians, and other team members.

  • Develop and/or update Trane purchased part Engineering Specifications.

  • Define, identify, and complete appropriate qualification testing activities.

  • Prepare schedules, report status to leadership, and meet project milestones.

  • Effectively meet the needs of internal and external customers, through documenting, reviewing and prioritizing customer requirements.

  • Ability to travel both domestically and abroad up to two weeks at a time. Able to attain the necessary visa for travel when applicable. Expected travel time 10%.

What you will bring:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering and at least 5 years of engineering work experience is a minimum requirement.

  • A Master's Degree in Engineering is plus.

  • Experience with product design, bill of materials, engineering specifications, and product manufacturing.

  • Understanding HVAC system functions:refrigeration, heat transfer, airflow and ventilation.

  • Experience with application of various components used within HVAC systems such as coils, compressors, motors, and fans.

  • Understanding of statistics as applied to product reliability.

  • Good verbal communications skills and good technical writing and documentation skills.

  • Must be a self-starter with a high energy level and a high commitment to career.

  • Must have the ability to quickly and efficiently understand, condense, and organize information necessary to make engineering decisions.

  • Ability to work as an effective member of a diverse team.

  • Excellent technical, analytical and problem-solving skills.

Compensation:

Base Pay Range: $72,000 - $148,000 annually. Disclaimer: This base pay range is based on US national averages. Actual base pay could be a result of seniority, merit, geographic location where the work is performed.
