• Work in a team environment as part of Progress Rail’s Locomotive Air Systems Engineering Group;

• Primary responsibility will be design of either locomotive brake system, compressed air system applications, forced air ventilation system, or analysis of locomotive weights and clearances;

• Assignment will include providing production support and problem resolution to ensure brake system, compressed air system, Forced air ventilation system, or locomotive weights and clearances meets customer and internal design intent;

• Define design requirements working with designers, suppliers, supply chain, and other departments to ensure designs meet requirements and are released on time;

• Define verification procedures, production test procedures, and documentation as required;

• Conduct or support brake system, compressed air system, forced air ventilation system, or locomotive weights and clearances related testing, as required;

• Demonstrate compliance of designs to project requirements through analytical or experimental methods;

• Support other activities such as resolution of field problems and cost saving activities as required;

• Travel as necessary, and flexibility to work on special assignments as required.

Qualifications and Experience:

Required:

• 5+ years practical work experience in Mechanical Engineering or related field;

• Well-developed analytical abilities where problems are very complex;

• Well-developed and oral communication skills;

• Demonstrated understanding of manufacturing processes;

•Ability to travel (drive/fly) to different company sites for testing and engineering support;

• Ability to climb steep steps to enter locomotives for testing and troubleshooting;

• Ability to work in manufacturing environments with heavy machinery, including but not limited to active welding, overhead cranes, and forklifts;

• Ability to work on uneven ground around rails, and on railroad customer properties.

Preferred:

• 5 - 7 years practical work experience in Mechanical Engineering or related field;

• Previous locomotive familiarity and design experience;

• Familiarity with railroad operations, FRA laws, and AAR standards;

• Familiarity with international standards and regulations (AS/RISSB, EN);

• Familiarity with EMD engineering processes and systems;

• Familiarity with Polarion, or similar requirements management tools;

• Experience with Engineering design software(s) – Unigraphics/NX, TeamCenter.

Essential and Physical Activities Functions

• Strength – Position typically involves work in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment. Frequent/constant sitting. Occasional standing and walking. Occasional light to medium-level lifting or carrying (up to 30 pounds);

• Motion – Position regularly requires standard motions associated with working in an office environment. Depending on assigned project, position may occasionally require motions involved in an industrial working environment, including some low to intense levels of pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, crouching, stooping, kneeling, reaching, grasping;

• Vision/Hearing Requirements – Frequent verbal communications, including both talking and hearing;

• Work Environment – Position is typically located in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment which may include a non-temperature-controlled environment, as well as exposure to noise (85+ decibels), occasional exposure to temperature changes, heavy machinery and other hazardous working conditions requiring the use of PPE. Position may require travel as necessary, both domestic and international;

• Emotional Demands – Very high level of responsibility. Must be able to coordinate diverse aspects of a project. Requires significant interpersonal skills while sustaining very high standards;

• Safety – Position may occasionally require the use of Personal Protective Equipment during visits to industrial areas.
