Job Purpose:

The Sr Project Engineer – Systems Engineering – Power Products and Aftermarket Engine Systems will be responsible for day-to-day operations within the aftermarket engineering team. The successful candidate will provide primary systems engineering support for Power Products inquiry and orders. The candidate will work with sales, product management, service, and engineering teams to steer development processes and provide design and specification ownership for aftermarket products from introduction to end of life. They will be required to provide optimal engineering solutions, working with product teams to provide the best available technical options & product features; working with sales to clarify scopes & provide guidance for product offerings to our customers; and work closely with Customer Service to understand customer pain points that can be converted into aftermarket product offerings.

Job Title:

Project Engineer – Power Products and Aftermarket Engine Systems

Key Job Elements:

• Work directly with the Power Products commercial team to provide best in class marine and stationary engine products;

• Address customer needs for engine related technological capabilities, life-cycle cost reduction, and performance improvement with the design and specification of locomotive upgrades;

• Own solution design and specification throughout the product lifecycle;

• Develop subject matter expertise on EMD engine systems for marine and stationary applications;

• Complete scope definition, design high level concepts, gather resource estimates, and create planning BOMs to facilitate customer Inquiry to Order process;

• Convert critical customer requirements to product specifications for new products and customer solutions;

• Support product development projects within and across groups to bring new products to market;

• Leverage standardization across several customers for offerings to maximize margins;

• Participate in customer discussions with sales, service, and product teams to convert ideas into real product offerings;

• Travel as required.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Minimum 7 years relevant engineering experience in the field of locomotive or automotive engine systems;

• Understanding of EMD’s/locomotive operational practices and policies;

• Strong project management skills (planning, budgeting, and managing);

• Ability to apply engineering principles to design, test and other engineering procedures;

• Knowledge & prior experience with engineering CAD and analysis software;

• Demonstrated experience in leading or being part of a team/environment with multiple examples of executing product development projects;

• Solid track record of project leadership skills, including working cross functionally;

• Ability to build informal project teams (manage the matrix) to accomplish tasks;

• Previous locomotive or heavy equipment design familiarity and test experience;

• Ability to read & understand electrical schematics, engineering drawings and sketches;

• Comfortable using common computer applications to perform routine tasks (SAP/MSOffice);

• Ability to manage technical projects;

• Ability to work independently and with others;

• Good oral and written communications skills;

• Ability to travel as required.

Essential and Physical Activities Functions

• Strength – Position typically involves work in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment. Frequent/constant sitting. Occasional standing and walking. Occasional light to medium-level lifting or carrying (up to 30 pounds);

• Motion – Position regularly requires standard motions associated with working in an office environment. Depending on assigned project, position may occasionally require motions involved in an industrial working environment, including some low to intense levels of pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, crouching, stooping, kneeling, reaching, grasping;

• Vision/Hearing Requirements – Frequent verbal communications, including both talking and hearing;

• Work Environment – Position is typically located in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment which may include a non-temperature-controlled environment, as well as exposure to noise (85+ decibels), occasional exposure to temperature changes, heavy machinery and other hazardous working conditions requiring the use of PPE. Position may require travel as necessary, both domestic and international;

• Emotional Demands – Very high level of responsibility. Must be able to coordinate diverse aspects of a project. Requires significant interpersonal skills while sustaining very high standards;

• Safety – Position may occasionally require the use of Personal Protective Equipment during visits to industrial areas.
