Job Title: Sterile Processing Shift Leader

This job is located in Lancaster, PA

1.0 FTE, Day shift. Monday-Friday.

POSITION SUMMARY: This is a lead position, responsible for the daily shift to shift activities of the Sterile Processing Department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:

  • All duties required by SPD Technician and Resource Team Leader plus the following.

  • Participates in the education and orientation of SPD staff. Assists in training of personnel for decontamination procedures, equipment operation, set up of instrument sets, utilizing the Instrument Tracking System, case cart preparation, sterilization and personnel competencies.

  • Demonstrates and advises on principles of sterilization and procedures for area. Keeps current in sterilization technology and practices. Look for and advise on process improvements.

  • Maintains daily staff assignments. Assigns and supervises on their shift all technician task duties to consistently meet departmental goals to provide safe, sterile, instruments and supplies in an efficient accurate, professional manner.

  • Ensures timely completion of the workload and consistently meets case delivery times.

  • Maintains good interpersonal relationships with co-workers and all personnel, acting as a liaison and problem solver. Encourages good communication between manager, co-workers and customers. Encourages team building and excellent customer service.

  • Monitors staff compliance in the instrument and supply areas. Duties in this area include sorting instruments and equipment arranging set-ups, storing equipment for future use and picking instruments and supplies for scheduled cases. Ensures cleanliness, functionality and integrity of sterilized products. Ensures good quality assurance for completeness.

  • Records required information for monitoring every load of sterilized items to ensure all items were sterilized. Maintains daily record of workload and case cart volumes.

  • Maintain knowledge of proper techniques for infection control. Monitors all personnel for compliance with aseptic techniques and safety standards in assigned areas.

  • Enforces and implements hospital and department policy and procedures.

  • Implements a shift report on each shift to communicate current activity and next day needs.

  • Participates and assist in the implementation of the Performance Improvement Program.

  • Utilize extensive knowledge of instrumentation to provide assistance to user and staff.

  • Reconcile OR schedule with preference cards for next day cases.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: The following duties are considered secondary to the primary duties listed above:

  • Acts as a role model for staff and serves as a resource for problem resolution.

  • Attends and participates at departmental meetings.

  • Provides input for staff performance and competency validation.

  • Participates in the on-call responsibilities for this position as required.

  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED).

  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST).

  • Two (2) years or more of surgical instrument processing & patient care equipment experience.

  • Good communication skills.

  • Good organizational skills and prioritizing abilities.

  • Good leadership skills.

  • Basic computer skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two to four (2-4) years of CRCST/Surgical Instrument Processing experience.

  • One to two (1-2) years of SPD/OR supervisory experience.

  • Two to four years Sterile Processing/Central Service experience.

Software: Hospital information system, e-mail, Microsoft Office, Instrument Tracking System, Lawson and OR Preference Card System.
