100% - Regular Lecturer Duties:

Teach four undergraduate courses per semester. Course curriculum will include broad surveys of African and West African History as well as focused topical courses in areas of the instructor’s expertise. Lecturers may also be asked to teach the methods or capstone courses required for History majors.

  • Offer a robust curriculum of courses, which vary in size, level, and content and that highlight the importance and complexity of African History. Instruction will be primarily in person with the possibility of 8-week online course offerings, in accordance with departmental needs.

  • Provide instruction throughout the semester, develop appropriate material for class sessions, grade assignments in a timely manner, provide students with regular and precise information about their progress in the course, and give students clear information about how to improve their performance in the course.

  • Be available for consultation with students regularly in the department and/or electronically, for three regularly scheduled hours each week that school is in session.

  • Keep an orderly grade book on the Canvas platform and records of all evaluations of student work. Participate in assessment duties as determined by the department and university.

  • Maintain standards of excellence in teaching and the evaluation of student performance.

  • Adhere to departmental, college, and university policies.

Position Overview:

The Department of History invites qualified scholars and professionals to apply for a full-time, one-year lecturer position, with the possibility of renewal, for the instruction and possible development of courses in African History. Lecturers are non-tenure-track members of the faculty. The primary role is instruction with no obligations to perform research or service. The preferred appointment date is January 1, 2025; lecturer must begin by August 18, 2025.

The successful candidate must have a PhD in History or a related field and appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.

Salary: $44,000. This is a one-year benefits-eligible position with the possibility of renewal.

Salary covers two semesters (i.e. spring and fall). Additional online teaching with additional pay may be available in Winter and Summer sessions. The Department of History offers all faculty the opportunity to apply for modest funding for travel to give papers at scholarly conferences.
