Surgical First Assistant, Surgical Services Department Bluegrass Specialty Surgery Center is hiring a Surgical First Assistant for our Surgical Services Department in Lexington, KY. The Surgical First Assistant (SFA) is a “sterile” member of our surgical team. As a Surgical First Assistant, you will be responsible for helping prepare the operating room and assisting the RN, surgeon, and anesthesiologist before, during and after surgery. This Surgical First Assistant opportunity is a full-time position located on-site at our surgery center in Lexington, KY. The Surgical First Assistant (SFA) reports to the Operating Room Manager. Surgical First Assistant Roles and Responsibilities: Assembles supplies and equipment for scheduled procedures according to physicians’ preference cards. Inspects equipment for proper working condition prior to procedure; maintains availability of instruments and supplies to avoid delays, and reports observed or suspected breaks in sterile technique and acts according to policy. Adheres to aseptic technique when opening sterile packages and preparing for the procedure. Accurately identifies instruments, equipment, suture and supplies necessary in performing individualized surgical procedures. Helps transport patient to OR, position patients on table, drape patient with proper sterile procedure. Correctly uses, cares for, cleans and sterilizes instruments, supplies, and equipment as directed, and passes sterile instruments and supplies to surgeon; hold retractors; cuts suture; maintains inventory of sponges, needles, and instruments. Appropriately assists with the proper handling and labeling of surgical specimen Documents patient-care records and other forms according to facility policies and procedures and under the direction of the Registered Nurse Promptly advises the Registered Nurse taking care of the patient about the patient’s status or any changes observed Correctly identifies and labels medications presented by the Circulating Nurse to the sterile field to be administered by the RN or surgeon. Cross trained to function in Central Processing Department – including decontamination of instruments and sterile preparation and autoclaving. A ssures accuracy of instrument sets/trays before and after cases to return to decontamination. Positioning patient to maintain circulation and access for surgeon: Placing clamps and sutures Closing skin with adhesives, sutures, or staples etc. Applying direct pressure on veins and tissue Hemostasis: The stopping of excess bleeding and blood flow. Immobilizing patients on the operating table. Cauterizing wounds and vessels Packing sponges in body Splint/cast application Required Skills & Qualifications: High school diploma or GED certification Graduate from an accredited CCAEHP program to go on and earn CSA/CFA certification Completion of surgical technician course Operating room experience (2 years of previous OR experience is preferred) Experience in an Ambulatory Surgery Center is preferred Positive attitude, desire to efficiently support the care of patients, work in a team relationship with other health care workers to produce positive outcomes.
