Navistar, Inc. Chief Engineer - Autonomous Systems Development in Lisle, Illinois

Position Overview

As part of our growing organization, we are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Chief Engineer - Autonomous Systems Development to lead our autonomous system development team. As Chief Engineer and department manager this person will be responsible for development of Autonomous Systems Technology and integration towards our base vehicle platform(s). This will require close collaboration with various internal development teams across the TRATON Group, as well as external partners and suppliers to meet our customer and stakeholder demands.

As department leader you will be responsible for growing and mentoring your staff’s competence, in addition to developing and maintaining strategies, policies, procedures, and standards of work. As part of TRATON’s Global R&D team you will lead collaboration with development teams across our global sites and ensure proper integration of our team members and product development.

This position will be located at Navistar’s Advanced Technical Center in San Antonio, Texas. Support will also be required at Navistar’s World Head Quarters in Lisle, IL on a regular basis and occasionally at Navistar’s Proving Grounds in New Carlisle, IN in addition to occasional other business travel.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, build, and lead a group of skilled engineers ranging from highly experienced to developing professionals engaged in and responsible for E2E development of Autonomous functions/features and systems

  • Active leadership as part of a global management team focused on developing and deploying TRATON autonomous technology

  • Developing and managing department budgets, resources, and staffing plans, including training and development programs for staff

  • Responsible for leading the processes, problem solving and implementing solutions to the most complex and high-risk engineering issues

  • Contribute to the continuous improvement activities through participation in Lean projects, technical knowledge capture, process improvements etc.

  • Lead a team that will develop prototype vehicle modifications for concept development, design verification & validation, and customer reviews

  • Develop timing and resource plans to execute projects

  • Work with direct reports and matrixed teams to support activities

  • Communicate the status of projects across all corporate levels, either in person or virtually

  • Gather and elicit product demands including use cases, product requirements, voice of customer, and platform demands

  • Define architecture demands, principles, and requirements to support desired system functionality

  • Work across cross-functional development teams throughout system development and deployment

  • Collaborate with product and program teams to support goals and develop standard processes and approaches to ensure value stream alignment

  • Lead / participate in issue resolution activities during development, validation, and vehicle launch

  • Serve as leader to the organization and mentor to less experienced engineers

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Computer Science

  • At least 10 years of experience in product design/development and/or computer science experience

  • At least 4 years of experience managing technical professionals and technical staff in engineering and design activities

OR

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Computer Science

  • At least 8 years of experience in product design/development and/or computer science experience

  • At least 4 years of experience managing technical professionals and technical staff in engineering and design activities

OR

  • PhD in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Computer Science

  • At least 6 years of experience in product design/development and/or computer science experience

  • At least 4 years of experience managing technical professionals and technical staff in engineering and design activities

Additional Requirements

  • Qualified candidates, excluding current Navistar employees, must be legally authorized on an unrestricted basis (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee or Asylee) to be employed in the United States.   • Experience with Systems Engineering fundamentals, including requirements and architecture definition as well as verification and validation techniques

  • Experience with engineering and quality design and development methodologies: (FMEA, FTA, DFA, DVP&R)

  • Experience developing in safety critical regulated industries (aerospace, medical, automotive, etc.)

  • Ability to look at challenges holistically with a creative mindset to resolve system challenges and constraints

  • Experience in functional areas, such as:o Embedded vehicle electronicso Perception & sensing technologieso Advanced compute systems / ECUso Vehicle network communication systems (Ethernet / CAN / LIN, etc.)o Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) or autonomous driving vehicle, system, or component developmento Domain development experience in system design (e.g. steering, brakes, powertrain, etc. control systems.)o Experience with machine learning, DNNs (deep neural networks), or related training
