AWS Utility Computing (UC) provides product innovations — from foundational services such as Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWS’s services and features apart in the industry. As a member of the UC organization, you’ll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (Iot), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS, including support for customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.

We are looking for an experienced Systems Engineering and Operations Leader to contribute to the growth of our organization within Amazon Web Services.

Key job responsibilities

We are currently looking for a Systems Development and Operations Leader to help us lead a new team in London. You love to work with internal and external customers to execute projects and resolve issues. You will set the standard for automation and working at scale, dive deep into technical issues, and work diligently to improve the customer experience. You are a believer in the Dev-Ops model of service engineering, and you are excited to run operations in an environment where developers don’t toss problems over the wall. And you are happiest when you are working with empowered, world-class engineers to meet world-class challenges. Finally, with your strong ownership bias, you have an infectious desire to continually improve how things are done.

A day in the life

In a typical day you will....

  • Lead the deployment and operation of services in regions with specialized security needs.

  • Report on the health of these services.

  • Drive root cause analyses, and coach others on doing them, as well as leading local development to improve operational performance.

  • Drive continual improvement in systems operations through tool building and automation.

  • Define and drive projects and report on their progress.

  • Meet with customers to develop relationships and clarify requirements.

  • Create and refine the staffing and support plan for these regions.

  • Work in an environment where operational excellence is truly the first priority.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Engineering, or Mathematics or equivalent experience

  • 7+ years of relevant hands-on engineering and administrative experience in networking, network services, operating systems

  • 3+ years of experience as the systems engineering and operations leader for an Internet service or leading edge IT organization

  • Demonstrated success building and leading teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Computer Science or related field

  • Performance engineering and capacity planning background

  • Strong engineering fundamentals (networking, network services, operating systems) and experience leading teams running Network Services such as DNS

  • Leading development life cycle processes and best practices, esp. in the areas of deployment automation and monitoring

  • Experience with the deployment and usage of monitoring systems and experience with forecasting and capacity planning systems

  • Leading software development organizations in a “DevOps” model and experience with distributed systems at scale

  • Communication skills, both written and verbal
