    Position description

The Academic Coordinator oversees all the laboratory components of Ecology &Evolutionary Biology (EEB) courses.

• Plan the usage of laboratory classroom space and lab course schedules. Coordinate daily setup of teaching laboratories, provide technical support in laboratory classrooms, organize and maintain laboratory equipment, marine and biological supplies. Prepare computerized laboratory classroom occupancy sheets on quarterly basis. Provide students, faculty and Teaching Assistants technical support in all EEB laboratory courses as needed. Manage the instructional research needs of EEB's undergraduate Field Biology Quarter, Marine Biology Quarters, and field components. Develop laboratory safety plans for all laboratory classrooms.

• Ensure continuity of student learning through daily communications with

Faculty, lecturers and Teaching Assistants.

• Test planned exercises/protocols, analyzing data using appropriate software and mathematical or statistical calculations, to determine the correct results will be obtained by students, making in progress modifications of procedures when necessary.

• Make original contributions pertaining to laboratory methodologies associated with courses, proceeding without specific direction to organize and work out all techniques involved, and ordering materials required to support lab courses.

• Oversee equipment maintenance scheduling, and inventory control systems. Using technical knowledge of laboratory equipment, maintain inventories of teaching materials and equipment, track maintenance schedules and manage maintenance. Collaborate with internal and external vendors to ensure instructional, marine and biological equipment is maintained and in proper working order.

• Independently implement changes to lab content as broadly outlined by academic supervisor, making original contributions pertaining to laboratory methodologies associated with courses, proceeding without specific direction to organize and work out all techniques involved, and ordering materials required to support lab courses.

• Provide statistical and research data to support EEB’s grant writing efforts and laboratory course development. Assist with design, implementation, and maintenance of procedures to collect, organize, and exchange data and materials generated by all associated courses participating in research projects conducted in EEB laboratory courses.

• In collaboration with the Administrative Leadership, develop instructional budgets for each course. Field Biology Quarter, Marine Biology Quarters and field components, including supplies, equipment, vehicle rentals and field trips. Monitor and report expenses, ensure annual operations remain within budget. Generate reports as needed.

• Supervisory responsibilities include assisting with teaching activities by discussing and demonstrating experimental procedures with students and Teaching Assistants, working with academic supervisor and other faculty to develop and modify technical

materials related to courses, independently writing experimental protocols and training materials for equipment operation, and providing technical training and supervision to students, and visitors.

• Supervise undergraduate work-study students to assist with daily operations related to laboratory course and event support tasks.

• In collaboration with Student Services team, coordinate, plan and execute the annual EEB Research Symposium

• Organize and conduct organizational meetings with students, Teaching Assistants and faculty.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications

M.S. or Ph.D. in a life science discipline (Biology,

Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Physiology,

Biochemistry, Neuroscience or other related field);

experience in undergraduate laboratory instruction or

equivalent experience/training.
