Description

The Semel Institute is seeking to hire a full time Staff Research Associate 1 to complete the following duties:

  • Provide basic technical and administrative support in a research laboratory studying human cortical development and modeling the genetic basis of neuropsychiatric disorders. This includes tissue culture, molecular biology procedures and fluorescence microscopy of fixed samples. A large part of the work will be performing mammalian tissue culture of neural stem cells and tissues, and modulating gene expression in these samples via nucleic acid delivery methods.

  • Perform techniques involving DNA, RNA, and protein extraction from human biological materials of different types; generate DNA plasmids for cell culture studies

  • Perform PCR and gel electrophoresis; perform Western blots; perform immunocytochemistry and immunohistochemistry

  • Image samples in confocal microscopes; prepare buffers, solutions, and chemicals for lab experiments

  • Perform basic data analysis and interpretation; document experimental results

  • Assist with figures for grant applications and publications

  • Provide technical assistance in the lab, including assisting other members of the lab; and assisting with training of lab assistants and students.

  • Perform laboratory administrative duties, including inventorying and ordering supplies, unpacking supplies, maintaining laboratory databases and protocols, assisting with equipment maintenance, and biohazard and chemical disposal.

Pay Range: $24.88 - $29.67 hourly.Qualifications

Previous lab experience, knowledge of standard laboratory equipment and supplies, knowledge of tissue culture and sterile technique, knowledge of neural stem cell culture preferred, knowledge of chemistry to prepare common lab solutions, knowledge of laboratory safety procedures for handling chemical and biohazardous waste, knowledge of basic molecular biology techniques, general knowledge of University procedures.
