JOB SUMMARY:

The primary purpose of this position is to independently evaluate the credit worthiness of loan requests covering both existing customers and new credit relationships. Aside from performing financial analysis and cash flow calculations as well as the determining the viability of each credit request based on Banc of California`s lending criteria, the position holder is responsible for the timely, effective and efficient completion of required underwriting tasks to make recommendations and creating the appropriate Credit Approval Recommendation report for eventual forwarding to and obtaining approval from Credit Management.

The underwriter interacts and effectively communicates with Bank personnel and with existing or prospective clients.

Responsibilities

  • Review and evaluate loan application packages for completeness

  • Develop thorough understanding of the nature and history of the applicant’s business, the market in which the business operates, and assess the capability of its management

  • Complete spreadsheet of financial statements and/or tax returns

  • Analysis of tax returns, financial statements, and cash flow calculations

  • Recommend the approval, decline and/or restructuring of specific loan request

  • Identify the credit risk and suggest mitigants. Apply appropriate asset-based lending techniques when evaluating collateral where applicable

  • Prepare and complete the Credit Approval Recommendation report for submission and approval of C&I, Asset-Based Lending and Real Estate loan request by Credit Management

  • Assist in the preparation and completion of Commitment Letters (as needed) to ensure that the approval conditions imposed by Credit Management are spelled clearly to all parties

  • Review documents related to loan request, including but not limited to, UCC filings, appraisal report, Title policies & issues, lease agreements, credit reports, etc.

  • Review loan documents to ascertain key components of the credit facility and covenant/reporting requirements

  • Assist the Loan Processors and Branches in a timely boarding and/or funding of loan requests

  • Confirm and test computation of covenants in accordance with loan documents and prudent lending practices and validate maintaining financial tracking date as required

  • Prepare problem loan reports as necessary

  • Ensures compliance with all Bank’s policies

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in business or finance

  • Minimum of 5 to 7 years of underwriting experience in a Commercial Banking environment with expertise to handle diverse types of credit from simple business credit cards loan limits to complex business credits

  • Must be a self-starter and able to multi-task, work efficiently on own and team environment, and be readily adaptable to change.

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet completion time tables

  • PC proficient with emphasis in Excel, Word and CASH Suite (nCino would be a plus)

  • Strong writing and interpersonal skills

  • Strong financial analytical skills with the ability to evaluate complex financial statements and complicated business and personal tax returns

  • Experience in underwriting various Commercial Real Estate properties is a plus.

Salary Range: $101,212.80-$161,940.48 USD; Final salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with geographic/market data.
