Actalent Junior Technical Writer in Manassas, Virginia


We are seeking an experienced, Junior Technical Writer to work out of our Manassas, VA office.

This position is onsite only- not open to remote work

Experience with development of XML/SGML. Familiarity with the lifecycle of technical documentation as well as military standards, specifications, and best practices is desired. Must possess, or be able to obtain, a DoD security clearance.


  • Write and edit technical documentation in various formats (e.g., .doc, .PDF, HTML, and XML/SGML-tagged IETMs).

  • Able to comply with military specifications and technical documentation requirements.

  • Maintain established technical documentation lifecycle, to include review cycles and hardware and/or software update cycles.

  • Create supporting graphics (e.g., functional block diagrams) in various formats (e.g., .JPEG, .PNG, etc.) to support documentation functional descriptions and procedures.

  • Perform quality assurance to ensure technical and grammatical accuracy of documentation.

  • Collaborate with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) during development and editing to ensure technical accuracy of documentation.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Experience with HTML, XHTML, and XML.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products (including, but not limited to: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams).

  • Ability to research unfamiliar technology well enough to describe and summarize for an end-user; must be comfortable asking questions and collaborating with SMEs.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Meticulous attention to detail.

Additional Skills & Qualifications:


  • Experience using an XML editor (e.g., XMLSpy, Arbortext).

  • Understanding of the application and usage of S1000D Applicability.

  • Knowledge of military standards (i.e., MIL-STDs, MIL-PRFs, MIL-HDBKs, etc).

  • Familiarity with basic graphic design principles.

  • Understanding of a repository-based content management system (e.g., TortoiseSVN).

  • Experience with S1000D IETM Data Display (SIDD) publishing tool.


Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English, or Technical Writing, or at least 2 years Documentation Specialist experience in a military setting in lieu of degree.
