Under the direction of education leadership, the adaptive dance teacher leads and facilitates adaptive dance activities for students ages 5-21 with complex learning needs. Plans and prepares adapted activities, collaborating with educational leadership as needed. Employs appropriate teaching methods based on student needs and supports a multisensory approach.

Job Description

Key/Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Leads and facilitates adapted dance and movement activities for students ages 5-21 with complex learning needs.

  • Engages with students who use various types of AAC and have varying levels of support needs.

  • Working in partnership with support staff, ensures participation and engagement while maintaining a safe and structured environment.

  • Regularly monitors and evaluates student participation through observations.

  • Provides individual assistance, within a group setting, when needed.

  • Communicates consistently with education leadership regarding planning and scheduling.

  • Works with education leadership to identify, develop and/or update and enhance program curriculum according to evidence-based practice, incorporating feedback on an ongoing basis.

  • Ensures timely and accurate documentation of services, attendance and billing in compliance with guidelines and regulations and in appropriate format and electronic systems for all documentation related to the program.

  • Ensures proper facility set up/clean-up for each group session, may assist with room set up as needed.

  • Remains current with mandatory and other training, successfully completing within required time frames.

  • Performs all other duties, as assigned.

Our Roots:

YAI was launched in February of 1957 out of a small school in Brooklyn, New York. Initially staffed by Co-Founders Bert MacLeech and Pearl Maze MacLeech alone, their pilot program served just seven people. According to Bert, from its very beginning YAI has been dedicated to providing innovative services for the I/DD (intellectual and/or developmental disabilities) community. MacLeech envisioned a, “total life adjustment approach, emphasizing personal growth, social responsibility, employment goals, and the development of independence for the individual.” At a time when institutional living was the norm for people with I/DD, this vision was nothing short of revolutionary.

YAI Today:

Today, YAI has a team of over 4,000 employees and supports over 20,000 people in the I/DD community. This extraordinary growth shows the ongoing need for these important services, and YAI’s success in offering them. YAI supports people with autism, Down syndrome, and Cerebral Palsy, among others. Operating throughout Downstate New York and Northern New Jersey, YAI now offers more than 300 programs for people of all ages.
