This position is located at the Office of Materials & Road Research in Maplewood. The position will work full-time during the summer and part-time during the school year.
This position assists MnDOT's Road Doctor in pavement scoping and evaluation efforts to support MnDOT district offices and the TPF-5(504) pool fund study. The position will require working with multiple Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) technologies such as ground-penetrating radar (GPR), 2D-Accelerometer, LIDAR, and Thermal and video imaging devices to investigate surface and subsurface pavement conditions. This position will be involved in data collection, processing, reporting activities, and developing tools (i.e., templates, macros, scripts, codes) for automated analysis of extensive data. This position provides project and network-level engineering support to the district offices and explores and provides innovative solutions to actual MnDOT and partners engineering needs.
The position requires occasional travel to project sites within the state of Minnesota for data collection sessions, as the system is used to evaluate MnDOT-operated and managed roadways. These trips are mostly completed in a day, but occasionally they may take a couple of days and require staff to spend a night in a hotel.
Applicants must be current students in a secondary, post-secondary, or graduate school. Other qualifications include:
Enrolled in an engineering, science, or mathematic/statistics program.
Experience with Microsoft computer programs, especially Excel and Word.
Ability to learn and apply statistical analysis tools to data sets.
Ability to learn the use of basic tools, machinery, and testing equipment.
Valid Class D Driver’s License.
Basic programing skills.
Applicants must be a student in a college/university, trade, or technical school. If a student is enrolled at a credit-granting institution he/she must carry at least six semester (nine quarter) credits. If enrolled at a non-credit granting institution or one that only offers one credit per class, a student must be taking two or more classes per semester/quarter. Any lesser credit (class) load shall be treated as a semester/quarter off. Graduate students must be enrolled in at least two courses or making progress on a dissertation. You will be required to complete an Education Verification form prior to appointment.
Knowledge of rational databases.
Knowledge of engineering materials and testing procedures.
Knowledge of MATLAB and Excel Macro programs.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work inside an office or laboratory, or outside exposed to the weather elements (both cold and hot). The employee is regularly required to sit; use wrists, hands, and fingers to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talks or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel or crouch. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus. The employee will occasionally drive a motor vehicle in off road conditions. Periodically, the employee will walk on even and uneven/sloping ground. The employee may work in high volume traffic zones in day and night time conditions. The employee will operate machinery and testing equipment (using vision and hearing) under varying temperatures. The employee will occasionally move up to 50 pounds by pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying. Periodically, the employee will push and/or pull carts, dollies and two wheel trucks. The employee must be able and willing to wear and/or use personal protective equipment to protect the head, eyes, hearing, respiration, visibility, and feet from injury.
