JOB SUMMARY

The Multi-modality Sonographer performs any combination of basic to advanced ultrasound services and procedures for patients, which may include:? abdominal, Ob/Gyn, cardiac, vascular, musculoskeletal and small parts.? This position examines the patient?s clinical history in order to identify the purpose of the examination, frames the clinical questions that the examination is intended to answer and expands the examination as necessary to answer clinical questions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE

  • Performs multiple modality ultrasound procedures utilizing a variety of equipment and techniques and makes the necessary measurements required for the interpretation to obtain accurate, high quality results.

  • Identifies and defines abnormalities specific to the procedure and extends the scope of the examination appropriately, deviating from standard techniques when necessary and correlating other diagnostic test results with anatomy and function. Utilizes appropriate protection measures during procedures.

  • May assist physicians in the procedure rooms and operating rooms by performing ultrasound studies to aid in proceeding with complex procedures to decrease risk factors.

  • Prepares patients for procedures and obtains clinical history from the patient including related physical findings and pertinent laboratory data in order to fit the imaging techniques to obtain comprehensive and diagnostic exams to alleviate the probability of erroneous clinical interpretation of the ultrasound. Explains the purpose of the ultrasound examination to the patient and answers questions.

  • Records statistics and performs daily maintenance of the ultrasound Lab and its equipment, reporting all malfunctions as appropriate.

  • Acts as a resource to other staff, physicians and students regarding equipment, techniques, procedures and studies to optimize patient care.

  • Works closely with ultrasound team to ensure quality processes and adherence to protocols, and assists with unit and/or organization accreditation activities as delegated.

  • Implements protocols as new technology evolves, and ensures implementation and adherence to system standards.

  • Assures operation of equipment by performing quality checks following manufacturer?s recommendations and troubleshooting equipment as required.

KEY SUCCESS FACTORS

  • Must be familiar with approved clinical protocols for each type of ultrasound examination to be performed.

  • Must meet all of the qualifications and requirements for any two of the following modalities: Ob/Gyn, cardiac, vascular, musculoskeletal, or small parts, and will work a minimum of 25% of the time in the second modality. Pediatric and adult scopes are studied separate specialties by certification.

  • Knowledge and ability to apply complex sonographic methods, instrumentation and techniques.

  • Knowledge of relevant anatomy and physiology for each different specialty.

  • Knowledge of proper infection control, including precautionary procedures.

  • Knowledge of relevant laws regarding patient confidentiality and privacy.

  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with healthcare providers, including other sonographers, physicians and nurses.

  • Skilled in the utilization of computers and medical equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • EDUCATION - Grad of an Accredited Program or 2 years of work experience above the minimum qualification

  • EXPERIENCE - 2 Years of Experience

  • CERTIFICATION/LICENSE/REGISTRATION - Basic Life Support (BLS): BLS or BLS within 30 days of hire or transfer. Adv Cardiac Sonographer (ACS), ARRT-S Sonography (ARRT-S), ARRT-VI Interventional Rad (ARRT-VI), Musculoskeletal Sonography (MSK), Reg Congenital Cardiac Sono (RCCS), Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS), Reg Diag Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS), Ped.Echocardiography (PE) (RDCS-PE), Reg Diag Med Sono-Abdomen (AB) (RDMS-AB), Reg Diag Med Sono-Breast (BR) (RDMS-BR), RDMS Fetal Echocardiograpy (RDMS-FE), Reg Diag Med Sono-OB/GYN (OB) (RDMS-OB), RDMS-Pediatric Sonography (PS) (RDMS-PS), Registered Vascular Sonographe (RVS), Registered Vascular Tech (RVT): Must have TWO of the following:-ACS-ARRT-S, ARRT-VI-MSK-RCCS, RCS-RDCS, RDCS-PE-RDMS-AB, RDMS-BR,RDMS-FE, RDMS-OB, RDMS-PS-RVS-RVT.
