Northwood University Information Security Administrator in Midland, Michigan

PURPOSE

The Information Security Administrator will coordinate all activities relating to the security of Information Technology resources throughout the Northwood University system.  The position will provide technical solutions relating to IT security in working with the Associate Director of Security.  He/She will be responsible for the integrity of University systems, the confidentiality of electronic communications and the security of Northwood University's technical infrastructure. 

 

CHALLENGE

The Information Security Administrator is charged with various responsibilities that include implementing, monitoring, and managing various security related policies, procedures, and technology.  This multi-faceted position will perform at many different levels including ensuring legislative compliance, policy development, coordinating IT staff security activities, as well as hands on technical responsibilities. 

 

POSITION FUNCTIONS
  • Implementation of security strategy, architecture, and technical requirements for all information technology assets
  • Assist with the development of security policies for all University systems and computer equipment and ensure that existing and new systems meet the security requirements.
  • Lead the procurement, configuration, deployment, operation, and monitoring of security-related hardware and software
  • Maintain awareness of legislative and industry mandates (i.e. PCI, FERPA, HIPPA, GLBA) and trends in the IT security industry and assure timely and appropriate adjustments to Northwood University technology infrastructure
  • Effectively communicate security requirements within the University, build awareness and support among the members of University community
  • Ensure data backup systems are appropriately designed and functioning correctly
  • Assist in the development and monitoring of antivirus and malware defenses and systems
  • Assist in securing entry points into the network including firewall and VPN systems
  • Assist in the implementation and management of SPAM software and associated controls
  • Develop and test disaster recovery and business continuity plans for the University
  • Perform periodic vulnerability assessments and security audits
  • Keep up to date on relevant product vulnerabilities, evaluate system patches/workarounds, and develop procedures for patching security holes in University systems, including testing their effectiveness
  • Manage centralized logging system
  • Monitor appropriate logs for security related events
  • Assist with new system implementations by evaluating their security controls and associated risks
  • Investigate and report findings relating to electronic data for Human Resources and Campus Safety requests

     

AUTHORITY
  • Assist in directing and monitoring activities relating to IT security at Northwood University
  • Actively participates in discussions and decisions with members of the Information Technology Management Team
  • Address security concerns and work with staff/management across all areas of IT including Instructional Technology, Systems and Programming, and Technical Services
CONTACTS
  • Reports to the Associate Director of IT Security
  • Communicates regularly with other Information Technology staff members
  • Work with Management within the University
  • Communicates with other University staff on a project basis.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor's degree in computer science, management information systems, IT security or related field required

Knowledge of operating systems, network standards, protocols, and network architectures (wired and wireless). In-depth knowledge of firewall systems, including configuration experience
