Fairview Health Services Gambling Counselor in Minneapolis, Minnesota

Overview

This position is for a full-time gambling counselor at Fairview Riverside's Gambling Treatment Program. This position treatment adult patients who present with gambling addicition concerns. This is a daytime, full-time position.

Responsibilities Job Description

Provides initial clinical and ongoing assessments for adults

• Demonstrates knowledge of State of Minnesota rules and assesses accordingly.

• Gathers history and sufficient clinical data to confirm or rule out a gambling problem diagnosis per DSM 5 criteria.

• Gathers a comprehensive psychosocial history to include but not limited to medical, mental health, marital/family, employment, legal, cultural, financial, social, education, and sexual.

• Gathers a substance use history and sufficient clinical data to confirm or rule out a substance abuse disorder per DSM 5 criteria.

• Gathers sufficient collateral data when necessary to validate the assessment.

• Performs initial and ongoing suicide assessments and creates “Patient Safety Plan” with client.

Completes all necessary documentation required in evaluation. Develops treatment plan and goals

• Actively involves the client and family in the development of a treatment plan.

• Communicates/consults with internal and external members of treatment teams

• Makes referrals for additional services as needed and follows up to assess client acceptance of/or appropriateness of referral.

• Actively involves client in assessing progress on treatment goals and develops a workable plan for continuing recovery.

• Utilizes family and community resources to enhance client’s recovery plan.

• Regularly reviews and updates client status.

• Produces reports/summaries documenting client progress.

Facilitates one or more of the following components of treatment, including Phase I, Phase II, and After Care:

• Individual counseling

• Peer group

• Lectures and family groups

• Workshops, psychoeducation, and skills groups

• Discharge planning

Demonstrates knowledge of the continuum of care.

• Makes appropriate treatment placement (based on American Society of Addiction Management criteria).

• Demonstrates knowledge of psychiatric and physical health problems.

• Provides proper referral when patient is better served by another area, either within or outside the Fairview system.

Coordinates the program in support of the Behavioral Health and Fairview mission.

• Champions the Gambling Treatment Program model of care to referring agencies and community partners by serving as a liaison with students, faculty, staff, and outside/community agencies. Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the organization.

• Seeks opportunities to support program growth. Activities may include but are not limited to:

o Serves on the Department of Human Services Gambling Advisory Board

o Stays current on national trends and public and research policies related to problem gambling

o Develops, compiles, and writes communications and promotional literature for distribution such as brochures or flyers, coordinates process from development through organizational approval, printing, and distribution

o Establishes and maintains relationships with extensive external contacts.

• Helps determine strategies to move the organization forward, including assisting with setting goals, creating, and implementing action plans, and evaluating the process and results.

Demonstrates knowledge of third-party payers.

• Understands the criteria of third-party payers.

• Ensures necessary insurance authorization is obtained for the level of care recommended when necessary.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in one of the behavioral sciences or related field from an accredited college or university.

• Completion of 60-hour training program provided by or under contract with the Department of Human Services or recognized by the National Gambling Counselor Certification Board

License/Certification/Registration

• Certified by the Department of Human Services as a gambling treatment provider

• Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) or Mental Health Professional credentials or licenses as defined by MinnStat.245.462 Subd 18.

Preferred

Education

• Master’s degree in one of the behavioral sciences or related field from a credited college or university.

Experience

• One or more years gambling counselor experience.

Additional Requirements (must be obtained or completed within a period of time):

• Treatment and assessment skills

• Experience in screening, assessing, and diagnosing

• Ability to develop written treatment plans, including referrals for psychological testing, financial counseling, family counseling, legal counseling, and medical attention

• Ability to develop treatment plans that incorporate psychological, family, physical, vocational, financial, and spiritual needs

• Documentation skills
