The appointments will be 100% time over the nine-month academic year (late August to late May) at a rank depending on qualifications and experience, and consistent with collegiate and University policy. Salary is competitive. This search is open as to the field of American Indian and Indigenous Studies. Among the areas we are interested in are Politics/Governance/Law, Native Arts, Environmental and Social Justice Studies, Critical Indigenous Studies, Global/Comparative Indigenous Studies, or Literature and Film. Expertise in Oceti Sakowin studies and/or Dakota language, Anishinaabe studies and/or Anishinaabe language, or Ho-Chunk studies and/or Ho-Chunk language is desirable. Qualifications An appropriate terminal degree is required, as is an excellent record of research and/or creative production, teaching, advising, and service. If applying at the Associate Professor or Full Professor level, the ideal candidates will be those with a distinguished record of teaching, advising, and service, preferably including administrative experience at a research institution. About the Department The Department of American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota is recognized as one of the leading programs in the field of Indigenous studies. Founded in 1969, ours was the first department of American Indian Studies ever created in the United States. The department embraces global directions in Indigenous studies, while remaining committed to the Dakota, Ho-Chunk, and Ojibwe communities of Mni Sota Makoce (Minnesota) and the region. Our internationally-renowned faculty are committed to challenging conventional academic approaches while also giving students strong backgrounds in critical areas of language revitalization, policy and law, history, gender and sexuality, social theory, cultural studies, museum studies and heritage studies, education, the arts, literary criticism, film, and environmental and social justice. The department is recognized for its excellence in language teaching and revitalization, particularly in the Dakota and Ojibwe languages. All of this draws on the foundation of a thriving Native community on campus, in the Twin Cities, and throughout the state of Minnesota and the region. The Department is launching a Ph.D. program in American Indian and Indigenous Studies, and expects to admit its first cohort of students in Fall 2025. As of Fall 2024, the Department is moving into its own building which will hold office, instructional, event, and community space.
