This is a collaborative research with a team of scientists at the SROC and the Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics, University of Minnesota (UMN). The research will focus on the soybean cyst nematode (SCN) in pennycress, a newly domesticated winter oilseed cover crop intended to be relay or double-cropped with soybean in Minnesota and the north central USA. The overall goal of the research is to reduce damage caused by SCN in pennycress and soybean. Specifically, the successful candidate will study SCN overwinter survival in pennycress and SCN resistance/susceptibility in pennycress germplasm lines. The successful candidate will perform experiments, keep detailed records, analyze, and synthesize data, present results at local and national meetings, and prepare manuscripts for publication. The position offers opportunities to engage stakeholders and collaborate with multiple research groups at the UMN, and other universities in pennycress research. The researcher also has opportunities to observe and participate in other SCN research projects. Funds are available for two years. Initially, the position is offered for one year, and continued appointment is contingent upon the candidate's performance. There is possibility of more year(s) appointment depending on performance and funding availability. Minimum salary is: $54,840 Note: These are not positions to which permanent residency can be granted for international appointees. Supervisor and PI is Dr. Senyu Chen (chenx099@umn.edu). Job Duties: 70% Performing experiments and SCN-resistance phenotyping 10% Data analysis 10% Writing reports and publications 5% Presenting results at professional meetings and career development, and in outreach events. 5% Having opportunity, but not required, to supervise research staffs including undergraduate and graduate students, and technicians. Qualifications Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in Nematology or related discipline such as plant pathology, agronomy, entomology, and plant genetics. Preferred Qualifications: Have Nematology research work experience. Published record of quality research in the relevant fields. Familiarity with bioinformatic techniques such as QTL and candidate gene identification. Strong analytical skills and proven technical writing and presentation skills. Willingness to work as part of a diverse team of scientists and stakeholders. About the Department The successful applicant will work in the Nematology Laboratory of Dr. Senyu Chen at the University of Minnesota Southern Research and Outreach Center (SROC) in Waseca, MN, which is a branch research center of The College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences. The research involves scientists in the Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics on the campus. Dr. Chen is a professor in the Department of Plant Pathology, UMN. There will be opportunities for the successful candidate to interact with colleagues in the Plant Pathology and Agronomy and Plant Genetics departments in Saint Paul, MN.
