The successful candidate will work as part of a collaborative team to develop the protocols for using the MinION device to detect aquatic invasive plant species in the Midwest region. The MinION is a portable sequencer that allows multiple species identification completely in the field, with results available within 1-2 days, can be conducted by field personnel with appropriate training. The project goals are 3002-11023-00111077 to identify metabarcoding markers and optimize MinION protocols to detect up to 40 invasive plants so resource managers could quickly and cost-effectively conduct eDNA surveillance of waterbodies with high invasion risk or management needs. The tool would aid early detection and rapid response of AIS, as well as initiate eDNA biodiversity assessments. Job Duties: Gather information on aquatic invasive plant species Join field sampling including collecting eDNA samples Developing assays on Illumina machine for use on MinION device Testing samples on MinION device Developing protocol for MinION work Meeting with collaborators Participating in team activities and outreach activities Conducting relevant statistical analyses and interpreting results Lead data analysis, visualization, publishing manuscripts, and presenting/communicating results to a wide range of audiences Contribute to report writing and budget management Qualifications Required Qualifications: Required: Ph.D. in Biology, Ecology, Genetics, Fisheries, Wildlife Biology, Limnology, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field. Strong preference will be given to candidates who have experience analyzing environmental DNA (eDNA) or other DNA work. A strong work ethic, good communication skills, attention to detail, interest in aquatic invasive plant species with management implications, and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently are critical. Experience in quantitative modeling (using R), database management, and data visualization are required. Individual may be immediate post-degree or returning for additional training, updating, and/or retooling.
