Job ID360183 LocationTwin Cities Job FamilyAcademic Full/Part TimeFull-Time Regular/TemporaryRegular Job Code9546 Employee ClassAcad Prof and Admin About the Job Responsibilities/Duties: Located in the Department of Pediatrics, this position provides research support for Dr. Helen Vuong's lab in the Division of Neonatology. The successful candidate will be joining a newly-established research lab within an existing collaborative team studying microbiome effects on the developing brain. This position is located at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities on the East Bank (Minneapolis). 80% - Run scientific projects. The primary responsibilities of this position involve the management of mouse experiments, generation/management of primary research data, testing hypothesis with experiments designed during 1-on-1 meetings with Dr. Vuong, collecting, organizing, and analyzing data collected from tissue samples. 10% - Mentor trainees. Work with mentees (undergraduate researchers, graduate researchers, and laboratory technicians) to perform experiments. Train mentees on how to perform appropriate experimental protocols, scientific/critical thinking, organize data, and analyze results. 10% - Data management. This position is also responsible for keeping detailed records of experimental procedures, updating inventories of samples collected, supplies, and orders. Data collected will be appropriately stored on laboratory back-up servers including google drive, lab external hard drive, and lab electronic notebook (Labstep). This position will also include training and supervising students on appropriate record keeping. Qualifications Required Qualifications: B.S. and Ph.D. degree in Biology, Microbiology, Neuroscience or other basic science field Preferred Qualifications: * Research laboratory experience, preferably in cell biology, microbiology, and/or neuroscience research * Excellent understanding of experimental design and scientific method including proper controls * Experience in handling and working with mice * Experience with rodent behavior, transgenic mouse genotyping * Detailed laboratory record keeping and organizational skills * Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, solve problems, and manage multiple tasks * Knowledgeable in Microsoft Office and ability and desire to learn new programs if needed * Excellent oral and written communication skills * Able to communicate technical aspects of the project effectively, as well as train personnel in basic molecular biology techniques * Experience with delegating responsibility, supervising, and quality checking the work of mentees (graduate, undergraduate and technicians) * Working knowledge of the University of Minnesota ordering system (UMarket) and experience with lab supply inventory management systems (Labstep and google sheets) * Preference will be given to candidates with strong scientific and personal integrity, strong work ethic, and enthusiasm for learning About the Department Committedto innovation and diversity, the Medical School educates physicians, scientists, and health professionals; generates knowledge and treatments; and cares for patients and communities with compassion and respect.
