Overview

Fairview Health Services is hiring a Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Operating Room (OR) team at University of Minnesota Medical Center West Bank Campus and Masonic Children's Hospital, located in Minneapolis, MN!

We are seeking a hardworking and motivated Registered Nurse to join our Operating Room team, which includes surgical technologists, nursing assistants, schedulers, instrument technicians, and MDs. This position will serve an adult and pediatric population. Our strong team is continuing to grow even stronger as we offer cross service training under the guidance of our RN supervisors and RN educator. Collaboration is extremely important, and we are looking for a new team member who will bring their positive energy, willingness to learn, and excitement for education and new opportunities to the table and join our collaborative team of dedicated people who are focused on safety and patient advocacy.

Schedule: This position will be working 80 hours every 2 weeks on the rotating day/evening/night shifts. The schedule includes: 8 hour shifts, weekday call as needed, weekend call every 3rd -5th weekend and currently 1-2 scheduled weekend shifts a year.

About the OR at UMMC West Bank

  • UMMC West Bank is a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Minnesota and in turn has students, residents, fellows placed in this OR daily.

  • The West Bank has 15 operating rooms, 1 EP Lab, 1 Cath Lab serving an average of 36 cases per day.

  • We provide innovative surgical suites for adult and pediatric patients and are currently renovating additional OR's to complement the existing 4 larger OR's.

  • Surgeries in this unit are team based among these specialties: Ortho/Spine/Oral (mainly adults), Peds CV-Hearts/Cardio Thoracic, Peds Neuro/Generals/Urology/Bariatrics, Peds Transplant, Adult Urology, GYN, ENT/Eye/Plastics, Peds Dental and Da Vinci Robotics.

Responsibilities Job Description

As an Operating Room RN, you will be responsible for:

  • Implements protective measures prior to procedure, including measures to prevent skin or tissue injury due to thermal, mechanical, electrical and chemical sources.

  • Confirms identity before the operative or invasive procedure and verifies operative procedure, surgical site and laterality.

  • Applies safety devices, performs required counts, manages specimen handling and disposition.

  • Applies principles of aseptic technique while establishing and maintaining sterile fields.

  • Performs skin preparations, monitors for wound contamination, and classifies the surgical wound.

  • Ensures perioperative environmental sanitation.

  • Supports patients’ rights and ethics by delivering consistent, proficient, and ethical care, within legal standards of practice, while maintaining privacy and support of the patient’s value system.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the health system environment and administrative issues that impact job performance, patient safety, and ethical considerations.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • MN RN license

  • BLS through American Heart Association

  • Minimum of 1 year RN OR experience or 2 years' experience as a Surgical Technologist

Preferred:

  • BSN

  • 2 yrs of Operating Room RN experience

  • ENT/Eye experience
