Overview

Fairview Health Services is looking for a Surgical Technologist Apprentice at various hospital locations (that could include Burnsville, Edina, and Minneapolis) within the organization. The position will require a two year full-time commitment, working three days per week within a hospital setting and two days in classroom instruction.

The apprenticeship requires the individual to work at Fairview and be accepted into the Surgical Technologist program at Rasmussen College-Brooklyn Park Campus, our education partner for the apprenticeship. The apprentice must intend to continue employment at Fairview Health Services. Upon selection for this apprenticeship by Fairview you will be required to attend the information session at Rasmussen College-Brooklyn Park Campus to begin the admission/enrollment process.

A registered apprenticeship is an employer-driven model that combines on-the-job training with job-related instruction, which progressively increases an apprentice’s skill level and wages.

Responsibilities Job Description

With apprenticeship training, you will sign a written agreement with Fairview Health Services that will outline the apprenticeship requirements.

The agreement will specify:

• The length of time you will be in training.

• The hours of related educational training.

• A listing of the skills you will learn throughout the specified timeframe.

In the Surgical Technologist Apprentice role; the apprentices will perform Surgical Technologist duties while studying toward certification, within limits of current training; work is guided and overseen by a Patient Care Supervisor at the assigned hospital location. This will include the following:

  • Work in a collaborative environment to deliver excellent patient care under the direction of a RN. •Will be considered a team member and will be able to facilitate all aspects of a surgical technologist as a scrub person, within limits of current training, during surgical procedures providing patient care services appropriate to the age of the patients (ages pediatric through geriatric) served during the shift of duty in collaboration with the RN.•May assist the Surgeon and Advanced Practice Professional with procedures and treatments as trained and directed.•Responsible for adhering to standards of nursing practice and patient care, correct use of supplies/equipment and maintenance of the surgical suite under the direction of an RN.

Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship program, surgical technologist apprentice may transition into a Surgical Technologist position with the organization.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Upon job offer, be eligible for admission/enrollment in the Surgical Technologist

  • Be able to attend college and work 24 hours a week at the hospital

  • BLS certification through American Red Cross or American Heart Association upon completion of the apprenticeship program.

  • High School Diploma or Equivalant

  • Regular attendance/job performance

  • Passing grades

  • Basic customer service skills, clinical skills, and computer skills.

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, prior healthcare experience, preferably as a instrument tech, LPN, nursing assistant or other closely related field.

  • Excellent customer service and communication.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Ability to work in a team environment.

  • Some college course work

  • Health care experience
