Barr Engineering Water/Wastewater Engineer - Senior Level (Hybrid/Remote) in Minneapolis, Minnesota

Job Description: Summary: Barr is seeking a senior-level water and wastewater engineer to support projects across its organization. The position can be filled full- or part-time from any of Barr's US offices or, potentially, remote. This person in this role will undertake challenging work for primarily industrial clients and focus on water and wastewater supply and distribution systems, collection and reuse, and treatment facility design, as well as NPDES compliance and permitting. This candidate will also have a role in day-to-day client service and business development. Project responsibilities will include working as an individual and leading project teams to assist our clients with evaluation, planning, and implementation of water, wastewater, and reuse system operations to address current and future goals including: Treatment technology evaluations that may include data analysis, mass balance calculations, modeling, bench testing, and pilot testing of physical, chemical, or biological treatment unit operations for established and emerging contaminants System operation, troubleshooting, and process improvement evaluations of existing treatment unit processes Long-range planning and facility management of water and wastewater and reuse systems, including evaluation of current operating systems and forecasting of future capital and operating expenses Development of conceptual and detailed engineering including plans and specifications for construction Regulatory assistance including regulatory applicability reviews and permitting support, as well as preparing draft NPDES permit applications Assistance with contracting, start-up, troubleshooting, and operation of new treatment systems Preparation of technical reports The selected candidate will have opportunities to assist with staff development through both formal mentor and coaching programs, as well as through their leadership on project and proposal work and practice group initiatives. In addition, the selected candidate will have opportunities to assist with business-development activities, including building and maintaining client relationships, tracking marketing leads and project opportunities, developing proposals and presentations, networking, participating in industry associations, and sharing Barr's capabilities with existing and potential clients. This job may require occasional, short-term, out-of-town travel. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering Professional Engineer (PE) licensure in home state with the ability to become licensed in other states as needed 15 or more years of relevant work experience Strong technical skills in a wide range of analysis and design related to water and wastewater engineering Experience with preparation of and managing preparation of engineering plans and specifications, equipment selection, and cost estimating Professional experience with federal and state environmental regulatory programs including NPDES permitting Exposure to work in a laboratory setting including bench scale testing and wastewater analysis Exposure to treatment plant operations Strong technical and problem-solving skills and attention to detail Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members, regulators, and clients Demonstrated effectiveness in building working relationships and leading and working with multidisciplinary teams Demonstrated project management skills Willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project needs Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship, now or in the future Possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record Preferred Qualifications: Advanced degree in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering Engineering knowledge and experience with industrial manufacturing processes such as mining, chemical manufacturing, ag iculture/food processing, power, and petroleum refining, and water treatment for industrial uses, such as cooling water and boiler feed Engineering knowledge and experience with treatment of contaminants of emerging concern such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) Sound understanding of applied aquatic chemistry and environmental microbiology Drinking water or wastewater system operator's license Completion of the EPA NPDES Permit Writers Training A hybrid work or remote arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and one's home office. A remote arrangement refers to working almost exclusively from one's home. This position can be based out of Barr's Minneapolis, Duluth or Hibbing, Minnesota, Ann Arbor or Grand Rapids, Michigan, Bismarck, North Dakota, Jefferson City, Missouri, or Salt Lake City, Utah offices.
