[Purpose of position: [The purpose of this position is to provide a service to the community in the case of a death of an individual or multiple individuals, provide supporting documents and photographs to the State Medical Examiner, determine cause of death, investigate and determine identity of the deceased, transfer custody of body to correct agency, assist in the death notification to the next of kin, and keep records of all death investigations on file. [This is a Part Time Position, up to 19 hours per week average. This position requires the Coroner to be on a rotating call 24/7 on a weekly basis, and must respond to calls. The Coroner will be responsible to hire and coordinate up to two part time Deputy Coroners to handle the rotating weekly on call shifts. *[Essential Duties and Responsibilities: [Coroner must abide by North Dakota Century Code 11-19.1 and is responsible for following guidelines thereof. [County Coroner is appointed by the County Commissioners to hold a term of five years. [Determines if there is a reportable cause of death or if a natural death occurred; informs law enforcement of determination and coordinates with law enforcement to secure and photograph the scene, determines a cause of death or a possible cause of death, contacts the State Medical Examiner to notify of death to prepare for autopsy scheduling. Contacts the appropriate law enforcement agency including when an investigation needs to occur. [If the deceased is a child, additional reporting and investigation is required by Coroner; Completes Sudden Unexplained Infant Death Investigation form; works closely with Law Enforcement in the investigation of the death of the minor; transports all minor deaths to the State Medical Examiner for an autopsy. [Completes identification of the deceased. Determines next of kin and where the next of kin resides. Arranges with the local law enforcement (where next of kin resides) to provide death notification. [Arranges for the body to be transported to the State Medical Examiner for an autopsy; ensures that all personal effects are left on the body; places appropriate identification tags on body as well as body bag; if no autopsy is needed, transfers custody of the body into specified funeral home's possession; authorizes release of the body from the scene of death. [Completes an autopsy request and forwards it to the Medical Examiner's Office as well as any trip ticket from an emergency responder, identification of deceased, photos available of scene, the coroner's report, and law enforcement reports. [Informs the deceased's family of services offered regarding organ donation and answers questions; reports to LifeSource a possible organ or tissue donor; notifies Eye Bank of eye donations; notifies the State Medical Examiner of family's decision during the autopsy. [Notifies next of kin for disposition of personal belongings. Arranges for disposition of body when next of kin cannot be found. [If an unspecified medical death has occurred, collects all medication prescribed to the deceased; obtains medical records available and has the ability to contact the last attending physician regarding past medical history and to obtain history on the last time they were healthy for the deceased; logs all medication by name and amount of medicine prescribed and filled and compares to how much medicine is left in container; disposes of medications and evidence in an appropriate manner. [Collects information and creates appropriate reports for each death: The Report of Coroner's Investigation, Investigative Report, all photos obtained at the scene, Autopsy Request Form, Sudden Unexplained Infant Death Investigation Reporting Form, Release of Custody Form from the State Medical Examiner, Trip Tickets from Emergency Response teams, and Case Reports from Law Enforcement or other investigating agencies, Prescription Logs, travel expenses and vouchers as well as time cards for case. [Receives he Preliminary Autopsy Findings and the Final Autopsy Report. [Notifies the State's Attorney regarding any type of scene called to; submits report to State's Attorney.
