The Pines at Shrub Oak is a 24-bed, coeducational, interim residential placement for students on the autism spectrum who may need significant psychiatric support and stabilization before transitioning to a less restrictive environment. Students at the Pines receive psychiatric services in addition to the academic and life skills instruction in a safe, supportive environment with a 2:1 student to staff ratio. 

Position Summary: 

Reporting to the Lead RN, the LPN is a year-round position, serving as an integral part of Shrub Oak’s comprehensive health and wellness program. The LPN employs an evidence-based, student-centric approach to providing high-quality, proactive direct and indirect nursing, medical and overall proactive wellness care to our students. The LPN provides front line support for the daily operations of The Pines Health & Wellness program both on and off campus, guiding and mentoring students, assisting with emergency response procedures, and collaborating with all members of the Shrub Oak staff. The LPN builds trusting relationships with students, families, the community and other medical service providers, while representing Shrub Oak International School in a respectful, competent manner. 

Essential Functions – Primary Responsibilities of the Position 

  • Collaborate with Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner around holistic health of students and intersection of physical and psychiatric/emotional well being 

  • In collaboration with RN’s monitor health and wellness of The Pines residents both as needed and on a routine basis 

  • Provide crisis response and first-aid for medical emergencies or student injuries, including collaboration with Emergency Medical Services as needed 

  • Support RN staff around providing medical case management including: 

  • Collaboration with student guardian/ family members around medical needs and medical care 

  • Collaboration with youth primary and specialist medical providers 

  • Scheduling of needed appointments including bloodwork, medical, vision, dental, and others as needed 

  • Routine monitoring of students’ height, weight, and vital signs 

  • Administration of student prescribed medications 

  • Collaboration with nutritionist and food service around dietary and health needs 

  • Coordinate with medical providers and pharmacy around prescriptions and refills of student medications 

  • Work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team of providers including psychiatric, clinical, education, and direct-care providers. 

  • Works directly with students and through Direct Support Professionals to provide health education and support students in the development of healthy lifestyle habits.

Minimum Experience & Qualifications 

  • Current NYS Licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in good professional standing 

  • Minimum 2 years of experience as an LPN working with children/adolescents 

  • Experience in an educational or psychiatric setting preferred 

  • Experience working with youth with autism and/or psychiatric illness preferred

  • Excellent analytical capabilities, with a demonstrated ability to understand, problem solve, and make sound determinations/decisions in situations with complex facts and data   

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic environment with multiple stakeholders while being sensitive and responsive to the diverse needs of students, families, faculty, and staff, with a high degree of cultural competency and collegiality   

  • Ability to effectively and proactively interact with a wide variety of individuals in a manner that values diversity, and positively portrays our programs, personnel, and philosophies   

  • Ability to multitask and make sound and appropriate decisions under pressure, where situations/circumstances are continually evolving   

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: Part-time and Full-time shifts available, daytime, evening and overnight. 

Pay: $45/hour + Competitive Benefits

What is the nature and scope of independent decisions made in this position?  

He/she must be able to make reasonable judgements and decisions, to handle the day-to-day aspects of the role; he/she will collaborate closely with RN staff on shift around decision making and will consult with on-call staff as needed. 

Work Environment  

The work will generally be performed in a school/residential environment.  

Physical Demands  

Physical demands are in excess of sitting and require walking or standing to a significant degree. The LPN is required to move throughout the campus on a routine basis and execute program operations. Daily desk work including extensive amounts of computer and phone time as well as the ability to navigate stairs, mobility around a large campus with uneven pavement, bending and squatting, lifting/carrying boxes up to 25 pounds, and the ability to rearrange furniture for events is occasionally required.
