This is a hybrid role based out of the Nashville office.

ABOUT THE TAX MANAGER 

Upperline Health is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Tax Manager to join our team. In this role reporting directly to our Controller, you will be responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of the Company's tax-related activities including compliance, planning, and reporting of the Company’s federal, state, and local jurisdictions including but not limited to Payroll, Income Tax, Real Estate and Property Tax, Sales and Use Tax, and business licensures. The Tax Manager will also be involved in providing guidance on tax implications for various business decisions. This role involves ensuring compliance with tax regulations, optimizing the company's tax position, and providing strategic tax planning.   

 

What You’ll Do: 

  • Tax Planning and Strategy: 

  • Lead, facilitate, and oversee all activities related to tax compliance, provision and planning for the healthcare organization. 

  • Manage federal and state income, payroll, sales and use tax, property tax and unclaimed property compliance and various licensing requirements for Upperline Health and subsidiaries.  

  • Oversee the daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual workflow as it relates to tax processes, including establishing accounts with new taxing jurisdictions, new jurisdiction set-up with UKG, tax movements, relocation gross-ups, auto allowance updates and amendment processing. 

  • Develop and implement tax planning strategies to optimize the company's tax position. 

  • Prepare or oversee the preparation of financial statements and reports for tax purposes.  

  • Provide guidance on potential tax implications of business decisions and initiatives. 

  • Analyze the impact of new tax laws on the company and recommend appropriate actions. 

  • Audit Support: 

  • Act as the main point of contact for tax-related inquiries during external and internal audits. 

  • Prepare and provide necessary documentation to auditors to support tax positions. 

  • Collaboration: 

  • Serve as the primary point of contact with the Company External tax advisers, integrating closely with them tax planning and compliance.  

  • Providing guidance on a range of property tax issues including complex, real, and personal property tax. 

  • Support the Payroll department with the preparation and remittance of multi-state payroll taxes for over 1,500 employees.  

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including finance, legal, and operations, to gather necessary information and support for tax-related activities. 

  • Risk Management: 

  • Takes full ownership of risk mitigation and quality assurance, with support from leadership. 

  • Identify and assess potential tax risks and develop strategies to mitigate these risks. 

  • Implement internal controls to ensure the accuracy of tax-related information. 

  • Process Improvement:

  • Study existing tax entity structures, policies, operations, procedures and business practices, and recommends changes that would reduce tax costs.  

  • Driving continuous improvement and supporting the adoption of new processes and technologies. 

  • Research and support strategic tax initiatives with a focus on implementing technology and efficient processes to streamline tax compliance, audit and provision reporting processes.  

  • Refine and improve data collection processes supporting tax returns. 

Qualifications of the Tax Manager: 

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) in accounting from four-year college or university; and minimum of five (5) years related experience.  

  • Healthcare experience is preferred. 

  • Experience with property tax compliance, tax planning, tax analysis, and related tax research. 

  • Expert with Microsoft Office Suite; Proficient with Payroll/HR software systems; UKG a plus. 

  • Demonstrates advanced project and process management skills; can effectively manage multiple large scale, complex projects at once.  

  • Ability to identify, analyze and resolve issues, perform research, and demonstrate critical thinking to implement tax advice related to new legislation and planning. 

  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local tax regulations. 

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. 

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills. 

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasking, deadline-driven environment. 

  • Strong organizational skills and high level of accuracy is essential.

COMPENSATION

Compensation is commensurate to compensation for similar positions in the region and based on prior training and experience.
