Position Summary/Description:

The Associate Dean for MSW Education leads strategic planning implementation across academic programming, ensuring that the school’s educational programs are innovative, impactful, measured, and integrated with all aspects of the academic, research, and service mission. The Associate Dean for MSW Education is responsible for the administration of the Master of Social Work ( MSW ) academic program and coordinates with the Associate Dean for Doctoral Education to administer the PhD program in the School of Social Work. The Associate Dean for MSW Education reports directly to the School of Social Work Dean and serves as council and support to the Dean and is a key member of the Dean’s administrative team.

The Associate Dean for MSW Education collaborates with the Associate Deans for Doctoral Education, Student Affairs, Research & Faculty Development, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, and Global Engagement, and other School of Social Work leaders to enhance and foster synergy among the school’s academic, research, and service/practice programs. The Associate Dean for MSW Education chairs the School’s Curriculum Committee and provides leadership on several school-wide committees including but not limited to the: Doctoral, Re-accreditation, MSW Recruitment and Admissions, all curricula committees (i.e., CMPP , DP, Research, Generalist) as well as various ad hoc committees relating to curricular matters (i.e., on-line development and globalizing the curriculum). The Associate Dean for MSW Education is the primary supervisor for the academic affairs administrative team (i.e., Associate Dean for Student Affairs; Assistant Dean for Admissions, Recruitment, and Financial Aid; Assistant Dean for Practicum Education) and the Office of Academic and Student Affairs.

The Associate Dean for MSW Education supervises fixed-term teaching faculty in the MSW program and oversees the entire MSW program which includes the development, growth, and well-being of 600 MSW students combined in our on-campus and online programs. In this role, the Associate Dean for MSW Education provides oversight and supervision of the student educational process. Tasks include assigning teaching workload, committee assignments, strategically designating committee charges to meet School and curricula goals and addressing student and faculty concerns as they arise. Additional responsibilities include being a key contact for the University’s Graduate School and other UNC Administrative units by providing leadership, planning, and implementation of the full educational program within the school. The Associate Dean for MSW Education participates in the University’s Senior Associate Dean’s council which meets bimonthly with other leaders on campus and the Vice-Provost.

The Associate Dean for MSW Education is the administrative officer who facilitates the planning, administration, evaluation, and continuous improvement of the school’s academic programs and ensures that the academic standards and policies of the University, Graduate School, School of Social Work, and accrediting and approval agencies are met. The Associate Dean for MSW Education is responsible for programs and policies that support academic progression. The Associate Dean for MSW Education represents the Dean at the designated School, University, professional, and community group meetings. They also assist the Dean in fulfilling School of Social Work operational responsibilities/support for special educational related projects as needed and are considered a resource and expert in the state of the pedagogy. This senior-level administrative leadership role models excellence and fairness.

This position may be eligible for a secondary appointment as a faculty member.

Education and Experience:

Experience with the development of asynchronous online social work courses and/or programs

A doctorate earned in Social Work or a related human services discipline (e.g. Counseling, psychology, public health, education, healthcare management)

Documented experience in the development of innovative degree and certificate programs (e.g. postbaccalaureate graduate certificates, micro credentials)

Documented experience with interprofessional collaboration across diverse university programs and operations (e.g. Student affairs, academic affairs, finance, community engagement and outreach)

Demonstrated experience leading the development of programs or policies focused on enhancing student advocacy and career development.

Documented experience with the procurement of extramural funding (i.e.. Federal, state, foundation) opportunities that support university or community engagement research and/or programming.

*A minimum of 5 years’ experience in higher education with progressive academic administrative and/or leadership experience (e.g., experience as a department chair, assistant dean, and/or program director or coordinator)
