The Town of Needham is seeking qualified individuals to fill the full-time positions of Laborer 2 for the Water team within the Water, Sewer, and Drains Division of the Department of Public Works. The position supports in the operation and maintenance of the Town?s water system, including supply, storage, metering, treatment, and distribution; maintains the storm drain system, including compliance with the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES); and maintains and cleans the sewer collection and pumping station systems. The Water, Sewer, and Drains Division operates and maintains the Town?s water system, including supply, storage, treatment, distribution, and metering; maintains the storm drain system, including compliance with the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES); and maintains and cleans the sewer collection system. Duties and Responsibilities Assist in installing, repairing, and maintaining sewer pipes, water mains, services and hydrants; read, install, remove and dismantle interior and exterior water meters, and clean storm drains, sewers, catch basins and pipes. Provides laboring services to the repair crew that includes repairing water, sewer and drain main service and breaks, responding to service calls, and all other skilled labor. Maintain work area and equipment in safe, operable condition, adheres to all applicable safety and health rules and regulations; provides assistance to contractors as directed, and provides on-call emergency assistance. Utilize hand tools, rake, shovel, operate power tools, and operate light hydraulic and small-motorized equipment on a beginner to intermediate skill level. Perform routine laboring duties of a skilled nature, alone or as part of a crew, such as digging, raking, weeding, lifting, carrying, grass cutting, fertilizing, planting, shoveling, removing brush or trash, cleaning, sweeping, light, painting or repair work or tasks of similar complexity. Operate small dump truck; provide on-call duties during snow emergencies, operating snow plowing and removal equipment; serve as part of a work crew in other divisions; assist other Town departments as required; and endeavor to continuously improve the services provided to the taxpayers. Requirements General knowledge equivalent to a high school diploma. Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and the general public. Ability to work outside in all weather conditions for frequent and extended periods, requiring the ability to lift, carry, and position heavy objects. Must have a valid Driver?s License. Must have a Class B CDL permit upon hire. Must be able to obtain a Class B CDL license within one year of hire (individuals will remain in their probationary period until they receive their Class B CDL license).
