[General Definition of Work]{lang="EN"}

  • Performs responsible semiskilled work in the installation, construction, repair and maintenance of water and sewer lines and appurtenances
  • Does related work as required.
  • Work is performed under regular supervision.

[Essential Functions/Typical Tasks]{lang="EN"}

  • Installing, maintaining and repairing water and sewer lines and appurtenances.

  • Installs water and sewer lines; repairs line leaks.
  • Repairs lift station pumps; replaces wiring, float, check valves, PVC pipe, etc.
  • Responds to service calls; repairs pumps and wiring.
  • Completes daily reports and service orders.
  • Repairs sewer and water lines and related facilities.
  • Unstops sewer lines with sewer rodding machine.
  • May operate trucks and lawn mowers in connection with assigned tasks.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

[Knowledge, Skills and Abilities]{lang="EN"}

  • General knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in the installation, replacement, maintenance and repair of utility lines
  • General knowledge of a variety of maintenance and manual tasks involved in the installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of utility lines and appurtenances; general knowledge of the use of common hand and power tools
  • Some knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of common automotive and mechanical equipment; ability to perform manual and semiskilled labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public

Requirements Education and Experience

  • Utility Maintenance Worker I:Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in the maintenance, repair and/or construction of water and sewer lines.Education requirement may be waived as determined by the Department Head.

Possession of Grade-C Water Distribution and Grade-I Wastewater Collections certifications issued by the State of North Carolina.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
