Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Grant Writer for The School of Nursing. The Grant Writer works with faculty and staff to construct, review, and edit competitive grant proposals that target NIH, foundations, government, or similar influential funding sources. Proposal development, predominately focused on rigorous research, may also periodically include clinical practice or educational projects. The Grant Writer assists faculty and staff in developing grant writing skills. This position reports to the Associate Dean, Nursing Science. The Grant Writer also, collaborates with the Office of Research Support, Grants & Contracts in order to increase SON’s capacity and competitiveness for funding opportunities.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Provides full life cycle editing and writing support for grant submissions, including managing timelines and project milestones, collecting figures, and information from various sources, editing documents and coordinating with multiple stakeholders involved in the submission.

  • Researches and identifies potential funding sources to support research.

  • Remains current in interpreting proposal requirements of high priority funding sources.

  • Assists with interim and final grant reports, thank you letters, and other communications with funders.

  • Responsible for collecting, researching and analyzing data.

  • Provides workshops on the fundamentals of good grant writing, general preparation of the grant application (i.e., specific aims, research design, budgets, analysis of reviews and strategies for rebuttal and re-application).

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master’s degree in Nursing, Biomedical Sciences, Life Sciences, Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering or related field

  • A minimum 3 years experience writing successfully funded research grant proposals to NIH, other federal agencies, governments, and/or foundations

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent writing, computer, and communication skills

  • Highly organized with demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision; independent judgement

  • Research background; expert in preparation of research grant proposals for submission to NIH or other federal agencies

Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctoral Degree

  • Research background

  • Experience with preparation of proposals from the health and/or social sciences

Equipment Utilized
  • Microsoft Office software; familiarity with specialized software to navigate Grants.gov, NIH RePORTER.
