Dr. Mandal, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Hunter College of the City University of New York, is seeking a full-time Research Associate who is enthusiastic about making impactful contribution to the microbiome filed in health and disease. The ideal candidate for this position has at least two years of previous full- time research experience in an academic or industry lab setting. The core role of this position is to perform scientific experiments at the lab bench to advance malaria-microbiome research projects. A person in this role must be able to effectively plan and carry out experiments, think critically about their results, and perform technical troubleshooting as needed.

The Mandal lab has broad interest in the role of gut microbiome in health and disease. Currently, Dr. Mandal lab is particularly interested in deciphering the role of gut Bacteroides in severe malaria. Understanding the exact mechanism by which gut microbiome contributes towards susceptibility to severe malaria will help develop novel intervention strategies to prevent malaria related fatalities around the world. The lab utilizes wet laboratory techniques of microbiology and immunology which includes mouse model of malaria, flow cytometry, aseptic microbiological techniques, anaerobic culturing, PCR, qPCR, ELISA, and more. Additionally, significant amount of omics data like metatranscriptomics, transcriptomics, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, shotgun metagenomics, and metabolomics are generated.

The Mandal lab is located in the North Building of Hunter College in Manhattan. Dr. Mandal is affiliated with CUNY Graduate Center doctoral programs, and Research Foundation CUNY.

Other Duties

In addition to the core role of performing scientific experiments to advance research projects, this position also involves:

  • Using software to keep up-to-date records of laboratory purchases, reagent inventories, and experimental procedures.

  • Helping students in the lab acquire new technical skills and master techniques.

  • Attending regularly scheduled lab meetings.

    Qualifications

The applicant must have at least a bachelor's degree in a scientific field. Additional educational training such as a master's degree is welcome, but is not required.

Applicants must have at least two years of full-time experience working in an academic laboratory or industry laboratory setting.

Required prerequisite skills are mouse models of malaria, flow cytometry, and aseptic microbiological techniques. Experience with laboratory management is a plus point.
