Job Description

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 9,000 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

DOC seeks to recruit an Executive Coordinator assigned to the Assistant Commissioner of the RMAS & Counseling Services Unit. Under direction of the Assistant Commissioner, Executive Director and Deputy Directors assigned to the Counseling Services Unit, the Administrative Manager or Executive Coordinator will be responsible for managing the administrative tasks associated with the Counseling Services Unit, which includes managing the compliance of social service-related minimum standards and local laws. This person will be responsible for analyzing overall programming and counseling operations and providing reports as requested with recommendations for improved effectiveness.

Additional typical duties for this position include but are not limited to:

  • Manages the administrative tasks associated with social service-related minimum standards and

    local laws, such as: The review, tracking, and submission of birth certificates for people in

    custody; Management and tracking of marriage applications for people in custody; Auditing and

    tracking of processes associated with Department issued social service forms such as

    money withdrawal forms and property release forms; etc.

  • Develops initiatives to better manage administrative aspects of the Counseling Services Unit

  • Plans, coordinates, and supervises agency personnel activities.

  • Coordinates training opportunities and professional development for staff.

  • May be involved in recruitment, employment planning, and personnel management.

  • Prepare comprehensive reports, using surveys, data, and other inputs that are analyzed.

  • Provides recommendations based on reports and data for improved effectiveness.

  • May work inside a correctional facility to assist with certain administrative tasks and interact with

    various staff, including uniform members of service.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and three years of satisfactory full-time progressively responsible clerical/administrative experience, one year of which must have been in an administrative capacity or supervising staff performing clerical/administrative work of more than moderate difficulty; or

  2. An associate degree or 60 semester credits from an accredited college and four years of satisfactory full-time progressively responsible clerical/administrative experience including one year of the administrative supervisory experience described in "1" above; or

  3. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's department of education or a recognized accrediting organization and five years of satisfactory full-time progressively responsible clerical/administrative experience including one year of the administrative supervisory experience as described in "1" above;

  4. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1", "2", or "3" above. However, all candidates must possess the one year of administrative or supervisory experience as described in "1" above. Education above the high school level may be substituted for the general clerical/administrative experience (but not for the one year of administrative or supervisory experience described in "1" above) at a rate of 30 semester credits from an accredited college for 6 months of experience up to a maximum of 3½ years.
