Your team

The role is part of the Employment team within BlackRock’s Legal and Compliance Department’s Corporate Law team. We provide legal counsel primarily to the Human Resources Group, but also to all other business groups, on legal issues related to all aspects of employment. We are a key partner to the firm in executing its human capital management strategy.

Your role and impact

The role will involve the provision of level legal support in the United States, Canada and Latin America on the full range of employment law issues that impact BlackRock’s business. A primary focus will be providing strategic counsel and thought leadership to BlackRock senior leaders and BlackRock’s Employee Relations team and Human Resources Business Partners, in connection with day-to-day advice and investigations, as well as managing employment litigation. The role is a senior role within a team of five attorneys. The role will be located in New York.

Your responsibilities

  • Provide practical, strategic legal counsel to Human Resources and business executives across the firm on a broad range of employment matters relating to recruiting, hiring, performance management, compensation, wage and hour, leaves of absence, return to work and accommodation issues, benefits, terminations, confidentiality and non-competition agreements, human capital management disclosures, and other global employment-related topics;

  • Conduct, direct or support factual reviews and internal investigations;

  • Manage pre-litigation and litigation activities, including with outside counsel;

  • Represent the company before federal and state agencies and respond to agency claims and/or demand letters;

  • Review and/or prepare employee agreements, performance documentation and separation documents;

  • Provide thought leadership and support for diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives;

  • Develop, revise and implement employment policies and training solutions and stay atop of industry developments to help BlackRock be best in class; and

  • Assist with Human Resources-related elements of strategic transactions / acquisitions.

You have

  • Minimum of 8 to 10 years’ experience in employment-related laws and regulations with direct counseling experience to business executives, with preference given to experience in the financial services industry and investigatory experience;

  • Meaningful subject matter experience in risk mitigation related to employee-life cycle events (hiring, employee relations, performance management, and terminations);

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;

  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple complex projects simultaneously, while supervising work of others on the team;

  • Strong communication and persuasion skills (oral and written), with both legal and non-legal professionals and comfort working in a role requiring utmost discretion and confidentiality;

  • In-house experience preferred; and

  • JD degree and member of the New York bar.

For New York City only: The salary range for this position is $218,500 - $260,000. Additionally, employees are eligible for an annual discretionary bonus, and benefits including heath care, leave benefits, and retirement benefits. BlackRock operates a pay-for-performance compensation philosophy and your total compensation may vary based on role, location, and firm, department and individual performance.
