Job Description

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner investigates cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent health, when unattended by a physician, in a correctional facility or in any suspicious or unusual manner or where an application is made pursuant to law for a permit to cremate a body of a person.

Under supervision, selected candidate performs moderately difficult work with latitude for independent judgment. Typical tasks include but are not limited to the following:

  • Answering telephone calls from the community, customers, and other agencies seeking information on requesting autopsies reports and other related records.

  • May analyze and review medical records for accuracy and quality.

  • Logs in requests for ME autopsy reports/complete case files into CMS RRU.

  • Processes subpoenas served on OCME for medical examiner's case files.

  • Retrieve and return case files to Municipal archives.

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  1. There are no formal education or experience requirements for this position. However, the ability to understand and carry out simple instructions is required.

  2. Candidates must be able to understand and be understood in English.
