Housing Specialist, Orchid House- Bronx

The Safe Horizon DV Shelter Program provides safe and confidential spaces for DV survivors and their children. Essential Job Functions: The DV Shelter Housing Specialist works with resident families to provide client centered support, housing advocacy, and safety planning and risk management. We do this work by:

Engaging residents to determine their housing readiness and housing options;

Engaging residents in weekly or bi-weekly sessions that focus on working collaboratively to overcome obstacles to obtaining housing subsidies;

Engaging residents to assess and determine their vocational goals and collaboratively develop strategies to work towards those goals;

Listening to residents without judgment;

Working with resident to formulate and implement their housing goals and a housing services plan;

Work towards helping residents remain resilient and motivated to reach their goals. Provide residents with information and referrals that they are interested in, entitled to, and meet the criteria for the referral;

Work collaboratively with the shelter team on behalf of the resident;

With the support of the Supervising Social Worker, helping residents identify their triggers and coping strategies when feeling discouraged or overwhelmed with housing searches;

Developing and fostering relationships with Brokers, Landlords and Management Companies;

Searching for and view potential apartments or rooms;

Understanding benefits and housing subsidiaries to better assist residents and support them with navigating systems;

Become adept at utilizing various external housing databases and tools;

Be knowledgeable about vocational programs and community providers and make appropriate referrals;

Accompanying residents as needed to apartment viewings and lease signings;

Advocating with and on behalf of residents to HRA, Brokers and Landlords;

Documenting all interactions in an electronic database and hard copy case files;

Collecting necessary documentation for housing our employment opportunities;

Completing housing packets and timely submit them to funder;

Plan, market, and facilitate monthly housing and/or employment workshops;

Participating in staff meetings, case conferences, supervision meetings, trainings, Housing Specialist meeting and other meetings as required;

Assisting in the daily operations of the work site to maintain adequate coverage and services in a trauma informed, healing environment;

Other duties as assigned


Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries with residents and staff

Utilization of Client Centered Practice (CCP) skills

Ability to use neutral and non-judgmental language when responding to clients

Understanding and responding to vicarious trauma

Ability to engage with clients using a trauma informed perspective


A bachelor degree with in human services, social services, behavioral science, psychology or a related field plus one (1) year of is preferred. Prior successful experience performing case management functions or eligibility determinations for community-based social welfare organizations desirable.

Expertise in the areas of domestic violence and/or social justice is strongly preferred.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is required

Fluency in Spanish highly desirable.

Additional Requirements:

Evening and weekend work frequently required

Paid mandatory training that occur in off-site locations and outside of the regular work schedule.
