Job Description

The New York Times is seeking an International Weekend Editor to oversee weekend coverage in our New York newsroom. This role requires strong news judgment, an ability to run coverage, sometimes with limited staffing, and strong editing skills. For this role, leadership skills including collegiality and tact are essential. This person must work smoothly with correspondents and freelance reporters, while also collaborating with editors across London, Seoul and New York. This person should be well versed in Times journalism and standards. You’ll be responsible for monitoring and responding to live and breaking news and editing news and enterprise stories.

We are looking for an experienced editor who has a track record of working with correspondents, leading and editing coverage. We want someone who can help shape ideas and own a story from beginning to end – to help reporters conceptualize stories and the best ways of telling them, to edit through all necessary drafts and elements, and to help ensure their work gets the widest possible audience. We’re looking for a leader who understands that journalistic excellence and digital excellence are one and the same, and thinks deeply about the best form and format a story needs to have the most impact.

The role works in tandem with the weekend editors In London and Seoul and requires working on Saturday and Sunday.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Generating story ideas and editing stories that demonstrate solid news judgment – from the immediacy of live briefings and spot news stories to explanatory journalism, features and enterprise

  • Supervising and working with reporters to shape those stories and bring them to life

  • Coordinating and communicating coverage during breaking and planned news events

  • Triaging news to help determine which elements deserve the most attention

  • Pursuing the International’s goals as outlined by the desk leadership, including thinking creatively and executing on new ways to tell stories

  • Working closely with the London and Seoul weekend editors, as well as with the department’s leadership and regional editors, to plan the weekend report in advance with the news desk and print hub

  • Editing a wide range of material for accuracy, grammar, comprehension, context and readability

  • Maintaining the ethical standards of The Times in all published material

Our ideal candidate:

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5-10 years of experience writing and editing copy for news and enterprise; compelling headlines and captions; or other display type and social copy

  • Experience and ability to deal with management, staff and sources in a highly professional manner

  • Experience collaborating with other departments to set and carry out publication plans for all platforms, including external platforms such as social media

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An appreciation of The New York Times culture, writing style and commitment to journalistic standards and ethics

  • Has experience collaborating with visual journalists on news and enterprise

  • Meticulous organizational skills; ability to prioritize with strong attention to accuracy

  • Ability to work effectively at the necessary pace to meet deadlines for multiple platforms

  • A strong collegial and collaborative attitude; effective written and verbal communication

  • A willingness to be flexible as the newsroom’s needs evolve

  • Professional judgment with respect to confidentiality

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $122,529.16 - $150,000.00.
